I have very little doubt that if the Initial D anime did not exist we would all be driving the new Celica right now. Other than at some spiritual level the new 86 is about as far away from the Corolla Levin/Trueno as a car can be. So, even that name is false to a large degree.
I never personally thought of the 86 as a successor to anything, and when I did find out about the supposed connections it was so vaguely loose I always considered it just marketing. I really knew nothing about the whole "eight six" legacy tied to it until well after signing up to buy the car. I definitely knew nothing about Initial D until this forum. There is no real family history there. It's more like an adopted member of the family.

I've always thought the 86, if it was related to anything, was something Nissan should have built as a modern day 240Z. That's what it reminds me of more than anything.

I have no issue with what Toyota has done with BMW, but it shouldn't have been called "Supra". It should have had a new name and Toyota should have reserved the Supra badge for a car they built themselves, even if that meant it was never used again.
I agree of what they should have done, but disagree that the Supra badge doesn't have value. Ford put the Mustang badge on an electric SUV because the Mustang badge has value. Similarly, the Supra badge will carry weight with many buyers.

The parts are made from all over the world. Cars are often assembled in other parts of the world. The engines likely come from Germany. If you meant designed then it was designed in Germany and Japan--not Austria; it was just assembled there.

It's really a modern S13 Silvia/240SX. Sadly there is no modern 240Z...

Well, in the sense that there are those who find value it it, I guess I agree with you, Neither the Supra nor the misguided Mustang move by Ford provides any value for me, but then again I'm not really brand loyal with much of anything. I'm a price/benefit whore when it gets right down to it.

My wife loves Mustangs, but she has zero interest in an electric crossover. Having a pony on it makes her even less interested in it.

Unfortunately probably none of them are from Japan (besides the actual badge itself maybe )

Probably because it's not Japanese, and a BMW...

Doubt that Japan has used their strained manufacturing capacity to make badges in 20 years or more. Most likely came from China, Korea, India or Mexico.

At this point, we just need to be thankful that these cars exist. People are saying it's sacrilege to call the Supra a Toyota because it's built on BMW bones...yet our cars were conceived on the same premise: platform sharing, without which these cars could never exist. You know as well as I that sports cars are an endangered species, and if we don't continue to buy and support them, we'll be talking about them in the past tense.

2021 Supra line-up to include the 4 cylinder for the US?

MotorTrend seems to think that it will be announced this coming Thursday at Daytona.

Maybe they're adding the six speed the Z4 currently already offers.

Meh will be the same story as the 86 with only a couple of additions.
"Too slow"
"Too heavy"
"Should be a Toyota inline 4"
"The MT is notchy/sloppy/too hard to shift/to easy to shift"
"The clutch feels wrong compared to my 14 year old Honda"
"Mileage sucks when I get on it"
"Not practical when it can't seat 4"
