Honestly, I like the idea of a hot hatch but not the 86 as a hot hatch.
In fact, I think Tada's approach to the 3 car lineup he desires is misguided. We have the 86 and that's fine, it's a nice RWD DD that isn't hopefully useless like a miata. We have the Supra seemingly because they wanted the name back into play but it's too alien to Toyota, they tried to stick to the inline 6 turbo too hard. When Nissan reinvented the GT-R nothing was off the table, I'm not saying the supra should have been a GT-R fighter, but when you cling to the past too hard you sometimes start to sell people a BMW for all the wrong reasons. And now the supposed 3rd car would be an MR2? Smaller harder faster and more expensive than an 86? Sounds good on paper but it's probably the farthest from viable when it's time to actually sell it to people. The Yaris also has proven non viable in the US, as shown by toyota's adoption of the Mazda 2 and the end of the actual Toyota Yaris. You yanks like your suburbans too much for your own good. That means the GR Yaris is out of play. So their third car should be a monster Corolla Hatchback designed and priced to compete with the Golf R, Civic Type R and WRX. That segment is already crowded you say? well, it's crowded because it's got room in it. the sales pitch for a 5 seater, 5 door hatch that also happens to have 300 hp is a lot easier than the sales pitch for a compact rwd 2+2 or a high power, high dollar 2 seater. |

Or bin the twins and redo the Celica, or MR2....
Twins 2012 now = 7 years AE86 = 4 years (Became famous because cheap car to turn into track hack, like a S13) Celica (progressively got fat and boring) Gen 1 = 7 yrs (I had a yellow one, it was awesome) 2 = 4 yrs 3 = 4 yrs 4 = 4 yrs (I had a red one, FWD yuck) 5 = 4 yrs 6 = 6 yrs 7 = 7 yrs MR2 W10 = 5 yrs (I had a white one, dial in snap oversteer fun) W20 = 10 yrs (more Manga boom time) W30 = 8 yrs I couldn't see the MR2 being a thing, way to niche, and competition from the MX5 would be insane, but a new Celica, yeap, I could see that. My 86 actually reminds me of my old TA22 anyway, much more than the fast back shape of the GT2000, and it looks nothing like a AE86 hatch. The whole Initial D marketing ploy by the Toyota marketing team to grab the whole Manga and drift generation worked well. I'm looking forward to finding out what is next, as long at it doesn't get built by BMW, and it also needs to be available with a manual. My 86 will be around 5 yrs old and due for upgrade in 2021. A new present from me to me for my retirement maybe? Until then I'll just keep reading all the "insider" information and other vomit for a LOL.

IM a bit remiss about the MR2 becoming fat and uninteresting...
it looks ugly but the thing was dyanmite to drive. I am too big for them ( and the miata, and the s2k) but id love to own one. their power plan is a bit lack luster but really the miata, ft86, and even the rx8 all where lack luster |

They could have taken the 86 and put a Celica name on it and it would have been fine, it's just a name. Personally I think the Celica badge would have been more meaningful to more people, rather than people not even knowing what an "86" is or that it even exists. I like the car and all, but having to explain that yes it's a thing and yes it's a stupid name to everyone is getting old, I just tell people I drive a BRZ or an FR-S, if they inquire further, then and only then so I specify it's the toyota version and no it's not surprisingly clean for a 34 year old car, it's just a stupid name.

Something cool better come out soon, my current BRZ is approaching 200k and I'm ready to buy something. Currently looking at a used M2/M3 or a new M240i and honestly kind of hoping to avoid going German. Considering an S3 once I see what the 2021 refresh looks like.
Man do I wish Honda would drop a new S2000 with 300 or more hp. The AP1 was hands down my favorite car, daily drove one for 7 years. |

The M240i has the same motor as the Supra which has me sold. It's supposed to be rock solid and has insane fuel economy considering the power output. Just having a hard time going M240i and not M2/M3, while the M240i is more fitting for my purposes.

Good call, I got to drive a M235i for a few days and loved the power, it’s a great highway car but felt heavy and tried to kill you when attempting to drive it like the 86 lol |

There’s been a few people who went that direction after the twin. I can see why. On top of everything you mentioned, you also get the nice luxury feel of the car. I think they are all great cars, but it won’t have that same raw, connected feel that the 86 offers.

This...I drive a VW golf as my daily/Winter car, it’s quite, great in the city and on the highway but after driving it a few days and jumping in my 86 I feel like I’m reconnected to the act of driving. It’s part of the reason I can’t let go of my twin for something more civilized. |

Second Generation FR-S/BRZ insider info...
Quote:
I’m not a fan of the trend where manufacturers put the ‘iPad’ up at the top of the dash, BMW and Mazda are two of the worst offenders, looks like such an after thought and breaks up the clean lines of the center dash, like the Mazda 3’s monstrosity, hopefully they keep it lower |

I'd take Moto as the most authoritative source of information.
