I'll jump in here with another vote for wheel straps. I use those on the race car both on the wheels and on the lca's in the rear depending on what's in my way.

Use to work for a company that serviced and hauled spec racer fords for their clients, and we always strapped over the wheels. Works great, and keeps you from tripping on long lines.

Towing yo

This sentance does clarify it it very well: If whatever you are towing has brakes fitted, then they have to operate from the towing vehicle.

I Concur,

I use wheel straps on all 4 wheels. I used to do the rear LCAs but the wheels is significantly quicker. All real race cars (GT3 FIA, etc...) are wheel strapped.

Mac straps are the absolute best in the biz. The over the tire straps with the track system is awesome.

Anyone with experience with loading a twin on a uhaul?

Just thought I'd answer my own question in case anyone else was looking to rent one. The U-Haul worked fine. I had two 2x8s stacked to help with the ramps and one 2x8 under the front wheels to clear the tires stops. I'm lowered about 1.25"

The trailer is heavy! but actually has some cool engineering into it to make it foolproof and durable against careless people. It towed just fine.

Also not having a brake controller was frustrating. It felt like the brakes were all or nothing.

The tow hooks are used to haul the car up on a flatbed. Once it's up there, you strap it down by the wheels so the car can ride on its own suspension. Leave the the tow hook strap slack and strap down all 4 tires.

As long as you use a soft strap that won't chafe or scratch the rims, it doesn't matter how the strap is secured as long as it is tight. When I towed a car with nice rims, I'd always pass the straps through the rim and crank down on them. Set the e-brake.

Thank you for this post! About to try it myself tomorrow. Relieved to find a good (or good-enough) experience with a U-Haul trailer.

Since this thread has been bumped; I noticed a lot of guys going through great lengths to deal with the fact that the hooks on many strap options dont fit through the front eye hooks. When I stumbled on this issue I went to tractor supply and picked up some chain quick releases and they work as a great adapter. Just make sure you get the proper weight rating. One of mine can hold the weight of the entire car. Here is an example.

I've seen issues with the very front of uhaul trailers and bumpers (not specifically an 86. just be careful with it and have some 2x6's to drive onto in case the bumper is going to hit the front of the trailer. IIRC they include a strap that goes over the wheel well for the front, so you'll need to get the car all the way snugged up to the front of their trailer ramps.

Since my original post I've rented one numerous times, your comment about the boards under the wheels is true. After the first time I used my own straps so I could position the car back further.

It was such a pain in the ass trying to locate one each time I ended up buying my own trailer.

haha didn't realize I quoted or was posting on a really old thread. Looking to get my own trailer as well, with specific measurements as to not interfere with tailgate operation while still having enough room for a wheel rack and gas jugs.

anything custom on your trailer regarding wheel racks or a gas jug rack?

It's an open trailer that has a basket in the front between the tread plates, this holds two VP jugs(it would hold more but interferes with the tie down straps) and a small toolbox for holding straps and such.

I just use a 30' enclosed. It's really the only way to conveniently mount the stripper pole.

In case anyone else would want to see a twin on a U-Haul trailer, here are some quick photos.

What redlined600 says about bringing the necessary planking is spot on, and it echoes what U-Haul recommends for low-clearance vehicles. I bought four planks to ease the approach angle (laid them down side by side so that I didn't feel like I had to drive on a balance-beam for loading and unloading), then had a fourth cut into smaller pieces as per U-Haul's recommendations. .

You can see that the lip would have trouble clearing the front of the U-Haul trailer without the 2" lift from the planks.

Here is a shot of the "wheel basket" over-the-top straps built into the U-Haul trailer.

Front chain, supplied by U-Haul. Seemed to work well enough.

Finally, here's the rear U-Haul chain, since there weren't traditional tie down rings available for the straps I borrowed. I put the fluorescent rag in there so I wouldn't be an idiot and forget to unchain in my excitement at getting the car home.

Everything worked as intended, and the trailer tracked behind the truck [I]really[I] well, which was a nice surprise driving through some narrow construction zones.

Okay, hope this works. I'm not skilled at posting images.
