Oh yea, I found out that, even though Idaho gives you 2 license plates, it is not a law that you have to have one on the front. One plate state!
I'm taking the front plate off the twin tomorrow. |

From the 40s until 1970 London was one of the major military ordinance and warehousing depots for the Army. With the downsizing in the 60s they decided to close up most of the depot since it took up several hundred acres right down the middle of the city. They held a public auction for much of the equipment stored there. Included in the auction list were about a hundred crated 1945 Triumph motorcycles. These motorcycles had been delivered too late to see service in the war and had been held in the depot for the intervening 25 years. My dad and 4 of his biker buddies decided they wanted some so off we went to the auction. When they got to the bikes the auctioneer explained that the crates had been stored in a warehouse that had been damaged due to a water main break so there was no way of knowing the condition of the contents. They had opened one crate so people could see the bike and it was pretty well packed in grease so other than a bit of rust on the bottom spokes and rims it look really good. The way they decided to auction them was that they would takes bids on one crate and that would set the price for all the others. They then would draw names for each of the other crates and you took what you got. There were a couple of hundred people interested in the bikes so they got bid up to $100 (1970 $s). Well my dad and two of his buddies won the draw and were given their crates. We loaded them all up in his old Fargo pick up and off we went home. At home we opened the first guys crate and it was pretty much like the one we had seen with just some minor rust that could be buffed off. Opened the second guys and it was as pristine as if just made that day. Then we opened my dad's. It was pretty much one sold rust ball. The tank crumbled at a touch, the sprocket and chain were one solid mass and even the leather on the seat had pretty much disappeared. Turns out that the grease that protected the others had just held the water in on his. He managed to save about $50 worth of parts off the whole bike. Of course 11 year old me told him he should have bought the brand new Bren Gun Carrier that sold for $500! He didn't really learn his lesson though since 20 years latter he bought a used, surplus, Ford crew cab that I immediately recognized as a poor buy but that is a whole other story.
