I don't have a motorbike and not have an experience; but once I wanted one so badly. My wife strongly disagreed about it. There was a great man in Turkey who was reviewing motorbikes (aka:"Altın Elbiseli Adam"). I was watching every video of his. Then one day he was killed on his bike because of some other guy's mistake. He used to say: "Experience is the most important thing for choosing a bike."

So if you have no experience:
* Buy a simple, cheap, powerless and light bike. Maybe a 125-250cc or a little bigger one if you are fat. Do not buy a 600RR!
* When you have the experience, you would know what you need better than anyone else.

This is "Altın Elbiseli Adam" (meaning: the man in the golden suit) He hated cars and loved the bikes; but he said BRZ is the best thing he had ever driven other than a bike. RIP.

I have an admitted bias towards Honda (its all I've ever owned, although I've ridden others).

In your price range it would be hard to go wrong with the CB300R or CB500F. They are classified as sport and standard, which means they'll be less aggressive but that's OK out of the block. Personally I'm no a fan of anything resembling a sport bike (just not comfortable for more than short runs) so I may not be the right person to ask though!

As others have said, if this is your first bike don't go with too much power, and I would add, don't buy new. You will drop it. Maybe not while riding down the highway, but at some point it will be on the ground.

I wouldn't be as afraid of the reliability on the rc390 as much the cost of maintenance/repairs and parts/service availability. Definitely not a deal killer if you really like the bike. I've owned a number of bikes from reliable hondas that can be serviced anywhere to triumphs with parts that took a month to get from england and didn't have a dealer or qualified mechanic in my area. There is a lot of fun in having a more rare bike that you have to learn to fix yourself. The only brand I have never owned due to fear of reliability/maintenance cost is Ducati. Beautiful bikes, but I've see too many brand new ones just die on the side of the road for riders. That said, I've also seen people ride them for 30k miles with no issues. Someday, I will probably buy one anyway



As long as it is relatively new, I'd get the one you 'like' the best though. Motorcycles should be fun and make you happy! Go take a look at them all, sit on them, rev the engine a bit and then buy the one that stirs your emotions and gets you excited

Too heavy in it's class. Had an FZ07(pretty much the same bike). It was okay but it was kind of floppy feeling and the front forks were way too mushy for my taste.

JFC you really are trying to buy the 86 of motorbikes. Low displacement, and slow.


Find a two or three year old 600 and roll on. You're most likely going to drop it or have some incident, so you might as well buy used. You'll quickly get bored of it, so you might as well buy something you can grow in to. I've found that 600cc (or 636 for a ZX6R) is about the best middleground between growing in to it and it not being something you ALWAYS want more of.

My favorite bike I've ever owned was a 650cc 1983 Honda Silverwing GL650 Interstate. I rode that bike everywhere including many 500-600 miles days. It was the perfect weight, perfect size (for me). I had it fully equipped with stereo/CB/intercom and lower fairings and the rear bag extension (the rear bag replaced the passenger seat).

Unfortunately Honda only made it that one year before discontinuing the Silverwing series, only to bring it back later as a Scooter (although a nice scooter)

Mine looked like this, except this one is missing the lower fairing (an option missing from most). This one does have the CB/radio antenna though.

I sometimes here people give this advice to buy a 600 so you can grow into it. I took that advice when I was 18 and bought a honda cbr600. 2 months later the bike was totaled and I didn't walk for a year, nearly lost my leg.


When I went back to riding, I got a smaller bike and learned to ride it well and then moved up. I really really really really really wish I had taken that route the first time. Some people are maxwrist and can start out on a liter bike and ride like piss and somehow not die, but I'd never recommend a stranger on the internet start on a 600cc sport bike.

Who's fault was it that you rode beyond your skill? You control your own throttle.....

Obviously if you're not capable of learning to ride something bigger or think you wont be able to handle it dont get anything with decent displacement.

That looks like it could be fun. Kind of like a gold wing lite!
I prefer leaning over the tank, but I'll put miles on anything with two wheels.
