Both the problems were fixed immediately with a software patch. Don't believe everything you read to be a worst case scenario. Reliability ratings that are low because a back up camera needed some updated software are a farce.

Many many people buy first year cars and have no issues at all. If nobody bought them there wouldn't be a third year. Small tweaks are happening all the time not just at each new model year.

Have you owned a VW/Audi before? Do you plan on keeping it beyond the warranty period? Price of maintenance and repairs down the line are something to consider unless you can/are willing to do them yourself. Getting into that cramped over engineered engine bay is a pain. As a long time VW owner, I don't even flinch at a $1500 repair bill anymore. I'm pretty happy with a $1200 repair bill. And a $1k repair bill I'm ecstatic because so cheap. Interior fit and finish are great at the start. But after 10 years the cheap plastic interior of a Japanese car will look better. Not joking and not exaggerating here. Just something to be aware of that reviews and test drives won't tell you.

On a plus side, the boost/HP/tq increases you can do by just chipping the car are are amazing for the price. I'm APR chipped.

I've got a friend who's getting an RS3 so he's constantly telling me about them. Apparently they are really fast with just a tune, like mid 10's at 125+ mph. The 5 cyl engine intrigues me too, hopefully will be tuned to sound like old Audis.

That said, you might miss lightweight/RWD. I drove his modified S3 at the track and strangely missed driving my FR-S.

I saw the video of the APR RS3 trapping 127 with no hardware mods. It was running an ethanol tune however the 93 tune was still 120+

I have a TTS with an APR tune, makes 350 crank torque at 1900 rpm. Stupid quick compared to my JR FRS.

Finally some truth here.

Yeah the low/midrange torque is huge compared to supercharged FA20's. Before his S3 he had a stage 2 TTRS and I remember that thing pulled like a train on the straights.

I'd like shorter gearing on the FRS. Make me shift to fourth to get to 60. Driving will just be that much more engaging.

How about the Chevy SS, Cadillac ATS-V or CTS-V?

Test drove an S5 Sportback. It's a fine car, but the acceleration was underwhelming. Felt slower than my old 550i under street driving. I'm sure it'll launch harder, but I don't really do launches. It's all about the 5-60.

The RS3 is stupid quick at any speed and the seats are very, very nice. I will say you will definitely notice the extra mass and 58/42 weight distribution compared to the FR-S. The RS3 is a couple hundred pounds heavier than the Golf R/S3 (which is already a couple pounds heavier than the Golf GTI).

The interior, aside from the awesome seats and a few alcantara touches here and there, is pretty much standard A3 fare. I find it to be about on-par with the CLA or 2-series, which is about on par with a top trim Honda or Ford (i.e., not stellar). Also, keep in mind that the paddles are wheel mounted, not column mounted, which is pretty annoying when trying to drive fast through a nice road.

At the end of the day, I don't think you'll be disappointed so long as you go in eyes open. I had a similar decision earlier this year and ended up with the Golf R. It had the sweet spot of utility, speed, stealth factor and amenities for my now longer commute. I could not rationalize something like the RS3 or M2, because great driving roads are not easily accessible where I am and 50 kph over the speed limit = car impounded, $10,000 fine and up to 30 day driver's license suspension.

In a couple year's time when the Golf R lease is up, I'll probably take a look at a Miata RF or the new STI.

TL;DR: Great car, but probably overkill for most people. Enjoy!

There's some interesting information in here and I'm flirting with about a dozen different ideas right now. I honestly won't know what I'm doing until I do it, so this post is only half-serious.

I don't care about the RS. I'm curious about the TT. I see plenty of people saying Audi reliability is bad, and others saying it has gotten better. There's about a 5% chance I might replace the 86 with a TT, but that really depends on whether or not it's a good trade.

Why not try a Kia Stinger or Genesis G70? V6 with twins RWD or AWD platform available.
