I dunno. It also sounds like it was coming from the back of the right side, which is where that vacuum pump lives. I've only made good calls on ones where the clack pops in and out with a more random clack ... pause ... clackclack ... pause ... pause ... clack.

Maybe that's what a totally shot one sounds like.

Can you take a clip from back there? Does the sound change when you pump the brakes fast to let air through the brake booster? I'm passing hearsay (well, readwrite) but someone mentioned trying that. Can't hurt.

Also, did you run it with the belt off as suggested? That would rule out anything on the accessory side of things. I've had AC compressors make some weird noises, generally not that regular though.

It is a bad sound. I feel like I would have it towed rather than drive it.

Would you say it’s not safe to drive? Because this is my daily

I haven’t had the chance as I jumped the gun thinking that pulley was the cause of that sound. I will try tonight if I get the chance. Is it safe to have the car running with the intake off?

Safe to drive or smart to drive?

Your car doesn't magically crash in to a wall if the engine blows up. But you will sit on the side of the road until it gets towed. Plenty of places I wouldn't choose to sit on the side of the road, but you don't always have a choice.

I would not drive a car with bad noises coming from the engine. Rent a car and get it to a shop. Or ride a bike? Back up car?

I have at least 5 ways at my disposal to get to work 7 miles from my house. Not counting renting a car or Uber. Always have to have a back up plan. I ride my bike to work 3 or 4 days a week as is, I haven't put fuel in my BRZ in weeks.

I can't say because we don't know what it is. That is why I said "I feel like I would have it towed." For how long has it been making that sound?

I’ve only driven it for about 3k-4K miles since the swap. It had about 36k miles on it when we swapped it in

Are you saying it has made that same noise since you installed the engine?

Yes sorry. I wasn’t clear enough. I always heard the noise but didn’t think too much of it until now since I started driving the car more again. I just got the p000b cam code fixed.

Maybe YOU can't but Bubba can. He says just to gently coax the rubber/plastic sealing ring off, add grease and pop it back on. If that won't work, Bubba says drill a small hole near the edge of the race and pump hot grease into the bearing and seal up the hole.

I think Bubba understood my question?? -

I think there's something goofy going on with a valve/cam on that right side (bank-1). I guess if you've already driven it that far, you can get away with driving it to the shop. Let's hope it's the vacuum pump. Fingers crossed.

Intake or exhaust cam? I just hope it’s not rod knock

Doesn’t sound like rod knock to me.
