CVT issue?

I have a little above 82k miles on my transmission and was wondering if this is a normal sound. It sounds like its coming from under the vehicle, and it resonates back towards the cabin as you drive by cars / walls.

Are you in the right forum? 86's don't have CVTs.

Lol apologies not the best in terminology. But you get the idea. I posted a link so any help would be great. Thanks!

It has never been changed, but I suspect that it could be causing the issue.

A recording from the engine bay may be more useful, but what you posted doesn’t sound like an auto transmission sound. If the fluid has never been changed, then it won’t hurt to have it changed anyway and it would eliminate that as the possible source of the noise.

Here you go. Hmm it actually does sound like its coming from the engine bay.

Well, whether or not the sound is coming from the transmission or not, your car's transmission is overdue for a fluid change.

That sound may be coming from a bearing (idler, alternator, compressor). Can you isolate it with a stethoscope type rig?

Ill try and see if I can. I’ll pickup a stethoscope and update. If it makes a difference, the noise picks up as I step on the pedal.

I got the stethoscope and I got some noise out of these 2 pulleys. I just pulled this image from google as it is too dark for me to take a decent picture. Any good after market recommendations I can look into? A pulley kit has been on my list for a while so I might as well pull the trigger on this.

Well, all pulleys will make some sound when they are running, however, they shouldn't "howl" or "grind" or "wobble". Do you have access to another like car that you can compare to what you are hearing?

You may consider taking the belt off and turning each pulley to see if it feels lose or spins rough.

If the bearing in one of the pulleys is bad, just changing the "wheel" part of the pulley isn't going to help.

I’ll remove the belt and find out

If you do suspect pulleys, after you take the belt off, start the engine and listen for the noise again. If you still hear it, don't bother spinning pulleys cause that's not it. If the noise does go away with belt removed then yep, start spinnin.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll keep that in mind.
