Wow. What is the break even on a system like that? About 20 years?

Thanks for the support and advice everyone.

I've really been struggling since it's the first time I've had to deal with this kind of situation, so this has all been very helpful.

I'm dropping the car off at the shop today and will let them handle dealing with my insurance.

Will just see how it goes.

I would just take it to the shop and have them fix it. If it looks crappy, then you can jump up and down.

Unfortunately they are under no obligation to replace repairable parts because you think they should.

It is a moot point; There is no grid power where they live. They catch rain water for all their water, farm some of their food, and use solar for all their power.

The down side is that they have no internet or phone. My dad is looking into a satellite phone, but has not got one...

Yeah, Last time my dad hurt himself (broke his back) My mom put him in the back of their truck and took him an hour away to the hospital. The ambulance would have taken almost three hours...

You have to plan that stuff. Our new house in Idaho is surrounded by farm land, but only 4 miles to a big regional health center.

I always felt safe taking my dad fishing at my place in Lassen county when he got older with health problems. Our little town on the lake has a volunteer fire department with a paramedic, and an airstrip. They get the helicopter there from susanville real quick. If you aren't too bad, they take you back to susanville, if bad, they fly straight to Reno. Pretty cool for being out in the national forest.

Tell them someone must have swapped in a Porsche engine.

Until you get the bill for a Medivac flight, if you don't have the separate coverage for it. My father-in-law was taken on a helicopter between two hospitals that are 15 miles apart because the surgeon he needed was at the other hospital. The listed cost of that 10 minute flight was $40,000. Yes, it potentially saved his life, but I mean really?

Good thinking. We also chose to live on the road that connects on both ends, as opposed to some of the local canyons that have only one outlet. There's one canyon that has two outlets, but they're parallel on both sides of a canyon. I really fear for the people in the Cull Canyon and Sunol areas. Long roads with one outlet. Cull is the worst since there are hundreds of homes with a single outlet. Are people going to run naked through the woods to escape the flames? I have no idea.

Not normal. That's where all the trouble starts.
