Just go mine installed, took no time to install and I have no regrets. Car sounds how it should have sounded!

I'm starting to acquire parts for my custom midpipe for my TRD muffler...
Having a little trouble figuring out which flanges to buy for connecting to the midpipe and to the muffler. Obviously I could just have the stock midpipe cut to use the flange, and the TRD midpipe cut to use the rear flange, but I'd rather keep both of those intact and make a FULL custom midpipe. So I have to find the correct flanges to do this... |

So I couldn't find a bigger flange to use for the midpipe and I didn't want to cut the stock midpipe, so I just had them cut the one off the TRD midpipe in order to make the new one.
Upgraded to 2.5" piping, but the section going to the muffler from the new resonator (Vibrant Super Quiet) didn't turn out that great due to the pipe bender, however there is MORE ground clearance now which is what I wanted. ![]() ![]() ![]() Immediately painted it when I got home: ![]() Results: No noticeable change in power. The new resonator lowers the db a couple points, its instantly notable that it is quieter now (which is also what I really wanted). The exhaust tone isn't as deep as it was though, a little more high strung not so much burbly. If I were to do it again, I would find a stock midpipe somewhere and buy that and cut off the flange. I would also keep the stock TRD midpipe rear section between the muffler and the resonator, or use mandrel bend pieces (but I couldn't improve the ground clearance like I did with this design, so tough decision there). But this is my daily driver muffler, I still have my straight pipe with the stock midpipe for anything hardcore if I wish. So I got what I wanted out of this. |

Just got a TRD locally from a guy who was parting out.
I really like its deep tone! At MSRP, it's definitely pricey and better options are out there. But when buying it used for half the price, it's worth it. |

I don't think the exhaust is damaged in any way, since about half the time I have no drone, and it's been like this since new. But I'm wondering if anyone here has any insights on why the drone on my car comes and goes. Could it be related to gas quality? How the engine is running? How the exhaust system heats up and cools down? Anyone experience something similar? Or am I going crazy?

I've had my TRD exhaust for over a year. I haven't had one bad thing to say about it. Practically no drone, great low exhaust note and the fit and finish is excellent.

Does anyone know what the power increase is for just the American D shape TRD exhaust?

I don't think there's any measurable power increase - Toyota/Scion doesn't claim any power improvements. It's more of a sound and looks improvement (for people who like the D shaped tips). |

2015 FR-S w/TRD intake and exhaust
I just purchased a new 2015 manual transmission Ultramarine FR-S. The TRD intake (eliminating the cabin noise generator) along with the TRD exhaust make this car sound great. I grew up with British sports cars of the 50s and 60s. This car has the throaty sound of an old Austin-Healy or Triumph, yet of course the boxer distinctiveness. Love the sound. Highway speeds at just around 70 mph are pretty good. I get more road noise than exhaust noise. No resonate droning (I am a musician so I would hear it).

I can't give any info on performance increase. But, I have heard both the TRD D shaped exhaust side by side with the TRD Release 1.0 4 tip exhaust. Both with the TRD intake. The "D" exhaust is clearly louder and has a deeper tone than the "4 tip". That's indoor at the dealer at start up, idle and revved up. I did not hear them under load.
If performance is equal I'd stick with my "4 tip". My gut feeling is that the "D" is louder because it's less restrictive. But I have no data to back that up. |

How can you go wrong?
Been on my '13 since sold in Oct '14. Sounds great - loud when you want it to be like in the tunnels at 80+ or when making a point in low gears. Quiet at low rpm around town so the popo dont take notice. Yea it drones at 75mph but that is what my 10 speaker audio system is for.
Best of all it maintains the warranty! Since I purchased a certified used that is 100K mi powertrain! |

LOL!
It's so funny how I've found this thread full of people praising the TRD exhaust while I'm doing research on how to get rid of the TRD and move on to something a bit more... expressive. I bought a used 2013 with TRD exhaust and intake dealer installed by PO. At first, I thought the exhaust was kinda cool in town. But mine drones moderately badly right at 72-74mph. Not enough to drive you crazy, but enough to push going 77 in a 70 when cruising. I've now owned the car for ~2k miles, and, for the first time in my life, I think this car needs to be louder. I'm a very considerate person, hate ricers, loud exhaust, not interested in bothering my neighbors, etc but jeez this TRD exhaust is pretty tame. A Prius was sitting in the left lane of a 2lane highway, going 50mph in a 65 zone. I dropped it 2 gears and did a pretty aggressive swerve-around (I promise, not my typical behavior), and redlined it through 3rd for added effect. I was really wishing for an exhaust that would shake the idiot Prius driver's bones like a train horn, but it was rather disappointing... I think I'll try a catless UEL header before I go changing the whole system to be unpleasantly surprised with some straight-piped nonsense. |
