Spent some time rebuilding and cleaning my "zippo' lighter. it had a marilyn monroe cover on it and got it working well. then did some reading. its just a chinesium fake sadly. but it works well. I dont even know how or why I have it.

Anyways started diving into actual Zippo's and found a vintage 1988 Brass one in commemoration of the battleship BB64 and now im about to spend money for it..

sad thing is I won't collect it and store. Im gonna rebuild it and polish it up and use the fuck outta it. That's why we have em right?

LOL "Vintage 1988" is not a phrase I thought I would ever read.
I have a nice vintage 1977 Canadian Army Logistics one around the house someplace. I should try and find it someday.

Mine is stainless. I used to refill it by dunking it in a storage tank of avgas at the base fuel depot. It would light anyplace.
As a Navy Cadet I hated brass since I spent so much time being told to polish it as punishment.
As a Navy Officer I loved brass since I spent so much time telling people to polish it as punishment.

As a non-smoker, I don't see the appeal. I buy my lighters at the dollar store with long necks to help with the fireplace or grill.

As an old smoker the zippo was my best option since disposables were new and hard to find in the 70s.

Never know when you might need a light. I use fire to decontaminate knives, or utensils. I also smoke cigars, and the aesthetic is cool

I love em for that, anything flammable and itll just work. No need to constantly search for bic lighters or who has what. Hell ive even used body spray a time or two. generally JP5 works pretty decently. And the fact you can use the cotton

Still applies to this day, out in the field or at sea. something that will light everytime? wind proof? also rebuildable? and the flint can be used as backup to start fires. same with the cotton? Come on now. tool cool

I used to keep a Zippo with me whenever I went hiking or fishing, in case I needed to build a fire. The wind resistance makes it so reliable. So hard to use a Bic in even a slight breeze, but the Zippo never failed me. But now I have a plasma lighter, which is equally wind resistant AND omnidirectional so I can light the bottom of the kindling pile more easily. Plus it charges via USB so I don't need to buy lighter fluid anymore.

Wonder if theres enough smokers to start a "show me your lighter" thread
I got a few, one of them is a swanky butane 4 nozzle one with a cigar punch built into the bottom. thing eats through butane though.

Not if you got a high enough step ladder.
