I believe that In order to buy a new fa20 through Toyota you have to buy the short block and head and then assemble the heads yourself.

Why the hell would you buy a brand new motor when these cars are getting wrecked by drift wannabes on the regular and wreckers are advertising complete low KM engines...……………………saw one the other day with 20,000km's on it, That's not even broken in IMO that's as good as new. Subaru naturally aspirated engines are cheap as time goes by you could buy a shed of them to keep your car going. If you really are planning to keep it long term maybe build a shed if you don't have one and visit the wreckers and take parts off crashed ones for storage, either way you could sell those parts down the line if you change your mind. Or if you have the room buy a wrecked one on the cheap and store it pull off parts you need.

So, basically, I bought the engine and the headlights, and got the rest of the car for free?

No, those prices are ridiculous. My complete engine done under warranty was billed for 9-10 grand.

Buying the complete car from the parts department then assembling the car yourself would cost like $150k in parts. This markup of parts is true of every car.

Oh I know, although this one seems to be worse than a lot of others. Here's something else you could get for that price...

Or the Type R motor for under $7k...

Yea, it is ridiculous, but the 86 is a special vehicle, so it makes sense.

I'm in the same boat as you, I'm just over 150k now and dreading the day. Dont think I want to go FA20, I was hoping to swap in a WRX or some type of OEM turbo motor. Dont really want to go over 10k.

You can get the complete engine assembly, part # SU00306771, from Camelback Toyota, for a mere $17,210.77 . In all serioiusness, their parts prices are very good; I order from them frequently for our 2005 LX470 (Land Cruiser).

I just got my car back from a warranty engine replacement. They ordered the short block, heads, camshafts, and everything else they needed to build a pretty complete new engine, and the (thankfully fully covered) parts bill came to around $8K. It did not include the intake manifold.

Any engine swap will cost you double that, cheaper to just rebuild and turbo kit but it might end up costing you more then 10k even for that ....or buy a low km used engine for a quarter of that and call it a day. You do a lot of miles so I don't know if a built motor with a turbo is your best option. Really when i come to turbo my own car it will be sitting in the garage more often and the Ford focus will be my daily.

I don't agree that 'any' engine swap will cost $20k. And yes I drive a lot for work so that is why I would aim for something that is turbo'd from the factory, like a WRX motor, so I would have a level of reliability. I would just throw a mild tune on it with bolt-ons and call it a day. Though, my car is now approaching 6 years old so I may pickup a new commuter car like a WRX or something and let this car sit in the garage and take it out only on nice days.

Most swaps that are worth the swap with full functionality are at least $20k.

Pure Autos k24 swap would probably be the cheapest, and it will still cost over $10k even if someone does it all themselves.
