Best place to get a brand new engine?
I'm planning on keeping my 86 forever. It'll sit in the garage for a long time if I have to.
I accept the fact that the engine will eventually give out, although stock. Where will be the best place for me to purchase a brand new engine besides the dealership? I heard that I can get a new IAG FA20 short block but those are intended for FI'd vehicles. Will it work if I'm not FI'd? Would I need a short block AND a long block or will the short block do just fine? |

Way 'back in the day" before "crate engines" became so readily available, people used to say that a "seasoned" used engine, properly remanufactured/rebuilt was better than buying a new engine over-the-counter at your local Chevy/Ford/Mopar dealer. Don't know if that was true then or now, though. Maybe buy a used engine now, rebuild it, and then seal it up for future use?
A "short block" is generally just the block with internals. A "long blick" usually means the short block with head(s) including the valve train. |

"Built" motors tend to not last as long as OEM, because tolerances.
If staying NA just wait till it is tired at ???, 000 miles and rebuild to OEM spec with OEM parts. I wish I had a dollar for every claim of, "I'm going to keep this car forever", which was then sold a few years later. I'd have lots of dollars......

Why new?
It would be a better use of your money to get a used engine and rebuild it. Even if money is no issue, pay for it to get rebuilt to your liking by a reputable shop. btw if it's not from Toyota, you're likely not getting new anyways. I just checked online, and full engine assembly is no longer available - https://parts.toyota.com/a/Scion_201...4410-1101.html only short block - https://parts.toyota.com/a/Scion_201...4410-1102.html

Why not buy another Twin to keep it company in your garage? You can butcher one to keep the other one healthy, much like organ donation.
Fill the engine with oil, stick it on axle stands and invest in a carcoon cover... |

car-part.com for engines pulled out of wrecked vehicles would be your option for used. A proper salvage yard will verify its running, test compression, and refund a core charge if you sent a bad one back.
