Pull engine, remove valve cover, they are in the cam carrier. Technically they are OCV screens. Page EM-31 in the service manual.

Jiffy Lube will clean them for $19.99








Seriously though. If there's loose sealant in the engine there is no reasonable way to get it out. The easy way would be not to drop sealant in the engine in the first place.

Yep, and avoiding that is tough, when you are removing something the size of the front timing cover, which exposes the oil pan, and various other passages, with old sealant able to flake where ever.

If I was remotely thinking about having a dealer perform this recall, I would pay for an extra day's labor of an experienced tech and personally ask her to:

1. Remove both of the valve covers at the same time.
2. Remove the pan and pickup tube.
3. Just before doing the covers, tape off the galleries and blow it all out with air blah blah blah...

The only thing affected by clogged AVCS filters is AVCS.

Bubba suggests to rotate the engine on its end before completely removing the cover. Then bang on the engine with a BF rubber hammer, then take off the cover, then use a shop shop vac and suck up any hanging chads of old sealant. Then, with a shop vac hose in one hand and a tool in the other, carefully remove all the old sealant.

I do this every day. Avoiding that isn’t tough at all. It’s rubber glue that is stuck to everything, it doesn’t flake anywhere. You have to physically remove it with chemicals and a scraper.

A wink wink plastic razor blade works best, but can damage the aluminum parts. Actual plastic razor blades work, but they take much longer.

It’s one of those things. Its easy to do it right, it’s even easier to do it wrong.

Interesting. Even after 80k miles, in my case, it remains pliable? I know they found one very small piece of debris caught in a screen in my engine. Timing cover was removed once, with the engine in the car, post recall service, and with the added difficulty of getting to the sealing surface, I attributed the debris to that removal/cleaning. I have nothing to substantiate it, just seemed logical.

Regardless, removing that timing cover does expose the oil system to FOD.
