I have to tell people that all the time, because I feel I need to be honest with them. The company I work for is relatively small (about 4,000 employees) and the front line staff in IT is only 5 to 7 degrees of separation from the CEO depending on whether you are a L1 or a L3 in your job title. All real movement is into management, and someone has to leave for that to happen. You just aren't going to get promoted on your timeline (which is always way to aggressive anyway).

The only real short-term career path is not up but out.

Although I could go up one or two more levels it would involve having to move to Detroit, Mexico, China or Georgia/Tennessee and even though those jobs come up sporadically I don't want to live in any of those places! If I went to the very top (3 levels) I would have to move to Germany. That position will probably not be open in my remaining working time even if I skipped the two levels in between. For me to move outside Canada to take a "higher" position I would actually have to take a fairly substantial pay cut so I am perfectly happy staying where I am at this point.

Got to the office at 6:48am. Finished everything on my plate by 8:00am. Now I read every on line article from 3 different news sites, shitpost here, maybe read some of my book till I'm off at 4:00pm. At least I have an interesting book today.

Ultimate 1st world problem: I don't have enough things to do at my job.

You'd think I'd be more than happy to sit at my desk and get paid to do nothing for hours at a time, but it just ends up making me feel guilty...
