Intake Cam Sprocket failure

Dropped my car for valve springs recall and was told that my intake cam sprocket was broken and had to be replaced.

Dealer told me Subaru would cover half of the portion, and dealer would take off the labor cost. However, I am still liable for some portion plus tax ($200ish)

Car is 68k miles 2013 brz. Is this common to have cam sprocket failure?
Is this something I can fight for it to have my portions waived?

Thanks

Appears it is not uncommon.

How did it break? Did it break during disassembly?

Codes or issues prior to recall work?

Good questions.

I would wonder what was broke about it? Cracked? A tooth broke off? Other?

Could be one of the cam sprockets that had issues from the beginning, and the valve spring recall work put it over the edge.

If your car was fine with no codes before you brought it in for the recall, then they broke it during the recall work and you should not have to pay for the repair!
