I was considering more about what I said above, about how the 3sgte block may bolt to the 3sge (longitudinal) transmission. I was figuring before that the blocks were likely the same, just as the 2jzge and 2jzgte blocks are nearly identical. It seems that the 3sge was available as a straight longitudinal layout and as a transverse slanted layout. The 3sgte was only available as a transverse slanted layout, so I don't think using the 3sgte would be possible. Not only would the longitudinal transmission likely not bolt up, but the oil system might be compromised rotating the block vertical if there are differences made to the block to accommodate the slant setup.

I wish my 86 had a modern 3SGE BEAMS.
Even with the emmisions stuff that would be required, I'm sure some parts, hammer and screwdriver and some tuning would unleash some high reving NA goodness.

I’m really debating between a 3sge, a k20 or building the fa20 and doing a transmission swap. I want something light, and I want something that stays true to the platform (ie, 4 cylinder 86x86). The 3sge successor, the 2zz, isn’t 86x86, nor does it excite me like the 3sge would. The k20 is probably the better motor, even though it is annopen deck and the 3sge is a closed deck, but I am partial to making an all Toyota setup than another combo. This would be down the line when I develop something just for the track.

I still haven't received a recall notice in the mail (guess I need to double-check my VIN - the Toyota site showed it as being affected) for valve springs...but with the way it's starting to seem more likely to have engine failure FROM the recall work...I might just leave things as-is and if it blows...well, time to swap in the BEAMS.
At least, that's my theory...in reality I'll probably get the recall work done if I get the letter...and keep fingers crossed, but at least have a "warranty" to fall back on. That said, I'd rather have a BEAMS than FA20...all things even (ie, not involving me paying thousands for a swap).

As much as I love my car, my greatest wish is that they'd done this the opposite - let Toyota handle the engine, and let Subaru do the 6 speed trans from the STI. Oh well, dreams keep me from staring at the ground too long.

Are STI transmissions outsourced like most other transmissions? The STI is just special because there are like two LSD’s on the AWD setup with like a torsion rear and a haldex center or something; I can’t remember. Are they known though for being stronger?

The STI transmission is known to hold up over 600AWHP and survive endless launches, it's basically a given that if you want a high horsepower WRX, you swap in an STI trans and driveline. It's an incredible feat to have that trans come stock in an STI, almost unfair, I don't know much about it other than at my friend's shop, it goes into just about every 10k+ WRX build

In 04 the driver controlled center became available and still came with the Suretrack. Doing a full driveline also lets you run the extra beefy STi rear axles. Many people call it too simple and not as amazing in the snow as things like Quattro, but if you want a driveline that does what the driver asks for, I don't know that there's a more competent system. Quattro has some amazing intelligence if you don't mind dealing with a a failure-prone Haldex controller, but remember that this is the car making decisions for you. If you want that, it's fine. If you want a mechanical lockup as you lay into throttle and aim/go to work, the STi is really a riot. (I love my STi driveline, but I'm not going to pretend it's always the best, OR the most refined...it's not.)
