Thanks for the thoughts on plane painting, folks.. very helpful.

I could definitely widen the search perimeter, but the savings would have to be very substantial to make up for the extra cost getting home from dropping the plane off, and then returning to pick it up for the flight home. I'll keep it in mind. Sounds like your boss had pretty deeeeep pockets... "planes?" Painted on a regular basis? Wooof....

@Tcoat I also know someone that had his experimental painted at a buddy's Maaco shop. Actually one of the nicest paint jobs I've seen on a plane. Can't do that with a non-experimental though.

Also, look to see if there is a school near you (or within flying distance) that does aviation training and would be willing to take it on as a project. I know a guy that got his painted that way, and it turned out fine.

On the flip side, at least according to VREF (the airplane Blue Book for those not familiar) A new paint job on your plane adds about $4,000 to it's value. Not much ROI, but its something.

Great stuff, DH. Yes, the quote was for a full strip to bare metal, 8 hours of body work for dents, dings, fiberglass tip repair, etc., primer, two coats base white, and two contrasting basic trim colors. All control surfaces removed, new stainless hardware.. the works. The price, considering, is probably reasonable for a great thorough high quality job. Just a big nut to swallow for what is, at least in large part, vanity and cosmetic. Like a boat, you never get out of a plane what you put into it when you sell it, so I'm not worrying about that much... no plans to sell it while I can still fly, which hopefully will still be another decade or two, at least. Love the idea of a school.. not sure if there's one in the area or not, but I'll definitely look into it.

https://www.planevinyl.com/

Never heard of vinyl on a plane, much less considered it.. interesting! I checked out the site, but there wasn't much on there about durability, cost, or maintenance. Seemed like the company was more geared towards intricate graphics, advertising, "promo" or sponsorship logos, rather than just your standard GA private small plane coverage. Any first hand experience with vinyl? OH.. and what experimental are you building? Always wanted to do that.. but never got around to it and, to be honest, would have had to choose between time building or time flying; never had time to do both. I do now, but at this point the Cherokee is fine. Keep me posted on yours!

I'll keep digging.. and saving. ADS-B, the interior (so Charlie and Bravo are doable, and so wife likes pretty interior)... then, paint if it's financially feasible.

Thanks again, all.

Well he ran a flight school, so that's why the multiple aircraft. He is an engineer for P&W with the flight school as a side business but I think he was lucky to break even or make a small profit with the planes. It was certainly worth the gas to fly to Alabama though if he went all the way there to get it painted. Maybe $9k instead of $13k? I don't remember the actual price he paid but certainly at some point the discount becomes more than the cost of the journey otherwise why bother? He was living in CT and only travelled to the JPL in FL so AL was certainly out of the way! (We brought them from CT to AL and back to CT so probably near $1k in AvGas)

No first hand knowledge other than having seen some. It's done a lot on helicopters, my understanding is most the "newscopters" are done this way now. I'm sure it has a life span and susceptible to the same things it would be on a car. Some of the ones I looked at do it on jets and commercial aircraft so I assume doing a GA plane wouldn't be much of an issue.

Zenith 601-HDS. Saying I'm building would be generous, right now I'm mostly watching it take up room. I've been trying to sell it/trade it because I need something to fly at this point. Had a deal in the works a couple of months back but that fell through.
