Bumper to bumper ext warranty
Just picked up a 2014 Cpo brz with 63k miles. They sold me a $1000 bumper to bumper warranty until 2021 or 100k. Is it worth it for $1000? Or should I cancel it. Car will be modified (suspensions brakes header). What are some of the repairs you guys have had to pay for out of pocket?

Those extended warranties are scams, skip it. If you ever do need to file a claim they want every single recommended maintenance work performed and proof.

You are paying $1000 for what is basically a 37,000 mile warranty. That works out to almost $0.03 per mile. In comparison my F-RS only uses $0.09 per mile in fuel. That is a big increase to your operating costs. My car has over twice that many miles and has had zero non-maintenance, non-recall repairs. There is almost no chance you will use $1,000 worth of repairs before you hit 100,000 miles. Now, that I've said that there will be people that say "well, yea but I had to have my entire engine replaced 0.1 miles after the warranty ran out right as I was driving by the dealership" so YMMV

Engine and tranny are covered since it’s cpo. And the car will be modded with suspension brakes Bolt ons and I will be pissed if they don’t warranty work just because of that (vw) did it to me.

Three times in two days this has come up in threads so I can just cut and paste much of my reply.
Extended warranties can be a hit or miss proposition. Some use them and it saves them thousands. Most never have an issue so they never collect and beyond giving peace of mind it was wasted. They are pretty much a gamble with you betting you will have a serious enough problem to make it worthwhile and the insurance company (they are insurance companies) betting you won't and keeping your money. Things to consider: The warranty will not cover wear parts and often any parts associated with them. If your TOB goes and takes out your clutch it may not be covered. Modification of engines or suspension could exempt those things from coverage. Much like the manufacturer warranty if you do something to the engine and they say it caused the problem they will not cover it. Some warranties are pro rated. They will only pay a percentage of the repairs depending on mileage. The extended warranty companies are out to make money and they do not make it by paying out easily. You may have a fight for coverage. All in all read the fine print so you know exactly what they will or will not cover.

I guess the most costly things are tranny and engine and they’re both covered until 2021/100k. And since the car will have suspension mod and other things, it’s not going to be worth it. I guess I’ll cancel. Thanks

So far it has been sort of shown that anything major that is going to go wrong happens in the first 50K or so. Not that it hasn't happened to people with more miles but they are the exception not the rule. This especially applies to the 14s and up.

When I bought my BRZ, they were trying to sell me different warranties by telling me all sorts of things like the electronics would go bad and it would be more costly to replace than if something happened to the engine blah blah blah. They were very persistent, but I kept kindly declining.
I usually don't keep vehicles long enough to really worry about being outside of the warranty period, but it may change with this vehicle, unless I double my income. I would have to at least spend double the price of the BRZ, aside from the Miata, in order to find something as enjoyable to drive. Congratulations though! |
