To Stroke or not to Stroke? (Luckily I work as a machinist @ a machine shop)

Hello all,

It's been a long while since I've been on here and I'm marking my return with a bang.

Unfortunately I spun a main bearing in my BONE STOCK first gen (early 2013) FRS. Luckily I got over 120k miles out of my engine before I suffered from what many others have. I

So now I'm at a crossroads for decision making on what route to take to get back on the road. Luckily I'm a machinist by trade and specifically an automotive machinist, so I have access to anything and everything I need to rebuild and for cheap.

Question is should I go with one of the 2.1 stroker kits, just keep stock crank and change over to forged rods and pistons or just rebuild with regular internals?

I plan to go FI by way of Edelbrocks Supercharger by next summer but I would like to keep my rebuild costs as low as possible. Seeing as I can do all the engine work myself it will be easy to do this cheaply and parts are my ONLY cost.

How good is our stock crank for instance? I've considered just replacing rods and pistons but the notion that I'll be pushing a 2.1 is almost too good to pass up. 2/3 of the cost of the kit is from the crank though.

Any advice from others that have gone this route is much appreciated as well as other advice opinions etc

The more I think about it in the more research I do, $3,600 Stroker is probably overkill for what I plan on doing since I only want to supercharge it and max hit 350 horsepower.

I'm thinking that I would be able to get away with just changing to forged pistons and forged rods and foregoing a stroker kit.

To me it just seems like a lot of money to add a tenth of a liter. Can anyone tell me what horsepower games are made from going with a 2.1 stroker kit?

a 10th of a liter for $3600

I think you answered you're own question.

Yeah I was only considering it because of all the other money I'm able to save doing all the work on my own

If it's so cost inefficient, why are there so many aftermarket of to go 2.1?

If you're going forced induction I don't really think it's worth the cost to add such a small amount of displacement. I haven't seen dynos, but what are you going to get? 10-20hp? Just add more boost.

Yeah I plan to go forced induction around summer of next year I just wanted to build an extra hopped-up motor because I have the capability to at my work and basically do it for free besides parts cost.

I also recently thought that I could get the kid a little bit cheaper but that crankshaft is $$$$

I know this may be a dumb newb question but is the stock crank forged?

I also wanted to run a pretty stout naturally aspirated engine so it was just a consideration

No idea, new to this platform. If going NA and trying to extract as much power NA as you'd like stroking is probably the way to go. If going FI seems like a waste of money You do have the resources available to make it way easier but on the same token you're still going to be using those resources to rebuild anyway

How come not doing a forged 2.3L stroker kit? Rods pistons bearing crank for about 5,500? You know the saying. No replacement for displacement.

A 2.0L making 200hp 300hp on 8psi
2.3L should be 230hp and 345hp on 8psi.

Plus the added safety of forged internals. While your in there might as well do valves springs and cams to really bring out the potential.

Doesn’t seem cost ineffective if labor is free imo.

Most people just do engine swaps before going this route. But most people can’t do the internal work themselves either. So a swap is easier/ more cost effective. Would be cool to see someone go this route and how it works out.

It's not that linear, especially with boost.
You'll have a bigger pressure drop to suck in air (which your SC doesn't give a crap about), but you'll still have the same intake/head restrictions.

Haven't come across the 2.3 kit. If it truly is 2k then I will definitely be going that route. I'm still in the research and selection stages of the motor build.

yes, the stock crank is forged. Most don't replace it when building the motor.
