Here is a promo vid for BMW Valvetronic, according to wiki it was introduced in 2001 on the 316ti in Europe of course: Here is a promo vid for Fiat Multi-Air, which people seem to rave about. They go from DOHC to SOHC and put that fancy electronically controlled hydraulic apparatus: I think they started in Europe simply because their emission laws are taxed (CO2 charge) as well as strict. At one point in time, Honda was running 8 VPC on the old NR750! That thing sounded so sweet!

Looks like a V8 that got its pistons squashed together. 2 rods per piston???

It's a V4 setup that used an oval piston. The NR750 were like 45K back in the early 90's. The Yamaha R7 was 30K back in 99. Extremely rare bikes of that era.

It is rumored that the NSR500 seat has 2 grapefruit sized cutouts near the tank. This was done to accommodate the massive balls that were necessary in order to ride it.

2-stroke is powerful. You are literally making twice the power than a 4 stroke.
It's just too bad it's not clean enough to use in other applications.... I'd like to see a 2 stroke diesel-something. Bike, car, anything.

I do wonder if they're planning on bringing in fuel injected 2 strokes with valves and maybe like, an electric motor/generator + turbocharger for scavenging, and of course separate lubrication. If stuff like the Lotus Omnivore (has variable compression!) or Ecomotors (not so sure about this for cars, since I read somewhere that relying on the piston to cover and uncover ports is very bad on the rings and is therefore too unreliable for automobiles) eventually becomes mainstream...exciting

Randy Mamola!! [u2b]90Woms8gb6o[/u2b] 2 strokes are fun to ride, sound awesome but you have to know what you getting into; having the correct gas:oil, not fouling out the plugs, improper jetting; checking the reed valves etc.

Back to more relevant thread topic... It would be interesting if Toyota/Subaru do a turbocharged version of the FT's engine with a variable geometry turbocharger rather than just a twin scroll.
But I must point out that if they start putting to many technological things on the engine it not only is more expensive but also harder to tune and modify for average joe without breaking the bank. |

I personally don't have any experience with a boxer engine but I can hazard some guesses. Bolt on modifications I think would be relatively easy. Consider the air intake manifold (and plumbing) being on top of the engine, exhaust on the bottom both of which I believe could be easily accessible leading to relatively easy installation of cold air intake, throttle body, intake manifold, header and exhaust components (cat-back and the like). I think problems start to occur when you want to say swap camshafts, valve springs, spark plugs, (direct injectors,) and work on the head with the valve cover removed (valve lash) because of the limited space between the heads and the sides of the engine bay. I'm not saying that it's not possible, I think that it would however take a lot more time and swearing compared to a strait or small angle V engine. This is with the engine still bolted on the car of course! Perhaps Ichi or someone with boxer experience could shed some light for us? |
