Face it, your "sports car" also has a bunch of concessions made to everyday practicality and drivability. So no, you're not the one person who "gets it" when it comes to sports cars and everybody else is confused.

That would be a race car.

Many people get it, you are not one of them. You are very confused.

Get your Civic already, this is boring.

Hm yeah maybe re: the Civic. I think you're the third person now to suggest that I get a Type R instead of an Si. You guys know that the Type R costs 40% more, right?

What is motorsport, if not racing? I'm not aware of any sport you can do with a car that doesn't involve getting the fastest time. Maybe drifting?

Ya, but it's the same price as a new 325i.

Thing is you don't know exactly what a sports car is, what you want is a sports saloon that 90% of the car buyer wants. That's not what a 86/miata/lotus is. at that segment of the cars, if you want all comfy/sports feel/good power/lightweight you have to pay 60k+.

* or you get a shared platform car like GOLF R/Focus RS/ STI/ TYPE R that happens to be a 4 door but can deliver you the performance cuz they shared the cost of the car with cheaper commuter car that uses like 70% of the same parts.

PSPS: I'm gonna throw in a last bone here.........go test drive a honda s2k, I know there are lots good examples of them near seattle.

You can always mod a BRZ/GT86 to make it go faster (like I did with a supercharger); but ugly will always be ugly. That would have been a bigger hurdle for me to get over.

If you care about nvh, comfort, harshness, quiet, etc, this car is not for you. If straight line speed is important, this car is not for you.

The BRZ ts is faster than the Civic Si in C&D's lightning lap. The biggest difference is better tires. This is the thing C&D is forced to ignore, but makes a massive difference in all their times. I'm stunned they haven't found a tire sponsor that will give them all the tires they need so all these cars times are on the same tire, as without that their test isn't worth much at all.

But track times shouldn't matter if the car is going to be your daily driver, because those sticky track tires destroy gas mileage.

This is a $25k car, please stop comparing it to vehicles that cost multiple times what it does, of course it will not be able to compare in any way.

If your most important priority is a car that looks good and is fun to drive, this is your car. If anything else matters more, look elsewhere.

A sports car is suppose to be raw and harsh. Especially at $25k, you just are not going to get any money put into comfort or quiet. The Dodge Viper was a great example of a six figure sports car, and that is why Dodge could never sell enough.

The OP is about getting a DD.
The OP is wound up about a C&D track test.
The OP isn't going to be tracking it.
The OP wants bragging points to bench race with.

meh

I don't think they ignore it, they get the racy-ist trims and options available from the factory for the cars. If they started putting on their own tires, they'd open themselves up to a WORLD of criticism about not using the right ones or whatever. I mean, you're already criticizing their tire choice and they didn't even choose the tires, they're using the ones that the manufacturers chose for their own cars.

You're right that the BRZ tS is faster than the Civic Si... by a fraction of a second. And it costs nearly $10k more. It's almost the same exact price as a Civic Type R which DESTROYS both of them on the track.

You can't tell me that a sports car is supposed to be raw and harsh and loud, and then when I point to excellent sports cars that aren't raw and harsh and loud, you say "oh yeah but those are more expensive."

Which is it? Do they have to be raw and harsh and loud or not? This is a question that's independent of the price of a car and you can't have it both ways.

I think I said specifically in a recent post that I do intend to track it... ?

I mean, not much, but maybe a few times a year.

Just buy the Civic Si. It fits your needs, also it can be fun to take it on the track.

Okay, now that we're arguing about nonsense like "what's the real meaning of the term 'sports car'," it seems like this thread won't contain much more useful insight.

Thank you to everybody who replied honestly about what they like/prefer about the 86/BRZ. If I were to distill it, it's that the car is fun to drive and looks good. Pretty simple reasons that make sense to me.

In the next few weeks I will go test drive a stock 86/BRZ. I will be plugging the hole in the footwell and I have high hopes that the car will be reasonably quiet and comfortable for regular road driving. Or at least not much less quiet and comfortable than something like a Mini. Looking forward to it, fingers crossed. Will post back, or at least I'll try to remember to post back. I doubt I will even test drive a Civic. It seems amazing on paper but I can't get over the dumb looks.
