It is low drag and the ECU is super aggressive at turning it off. So aggressive that casual (casual on my eyes anyways) has the compressor off and cooking me in the Florida heat. Regardless, it does have a little drag and if you’re just learning to drive manual it is one more variable. My 16 year old managed to stall 7 times in a row when I was teaching her and I’m thinking, “how could anyone stall in this car”.

Cut the guy some slack. In a week or so he will be laughing at the idea of turning off the AC. I’m just happy to see a new MT driver on the roads.

I just caught up on this thread. Geez...I'm surprised I ever learned to drive a MT (at 10 years old) given it apparently takes a Master's degree in Shiftology to be able to do it competently.

To your point, my Grandmother not only drove a stick (as did my Great and Great-Great Grandmother) but she was known to drive it with her right arm in a sling, shifting with her left hand, because she had some operations in later life that often had it incapacitated. If she had a passenger in the car she would often have them shift while she drove.

I have found that the biggest issue most people have learning is they forget the clutch pedal goes in both directions. Once you realize you can push it in as well as let it out, you should never stall a car.

I've taught a bunch of people and this is surprisingly hard to get through to them. They will sit there with the car bucking like crazy and you're repeating over and over, "push the clutch push the clutch!" and they refuse to.

I think we are all forgetting what the first week of driving a MT was like. I can hardly remember what day of the week it is these days let alone how bad I was at MT in the first week.

I only got a Shiftology diploma at a college

I guess there is more advanced shift theory they just don't teach you at college.

It is not the person that is in the first week that is frustrating but the ones that have done it for months or years. Some are giving pure fiction as fact (i.e. the AC has any affect on shifts) some are making it seem like there is only one way to do things (i.e. if you don't smash your knee off the steering column every shift you are ruining your clutch), and some are just simply perpetuating the myth that it is in some way difficult (so many examples of that).
I gave up trying to talk people through what to do on the internet a couple of years ago since it is almost impossible to describe the actions in print. If somebody is a week or two into it and still having issues they need to spend a couple of bucks and get a pro to show them. I doubt there are many areas that do not have a driving school where you can be trained in how to drive MT by somebody that sits besides you and can say what to do. People will spend thousands of dollars on pretty wheels or such but balk at spending a hundred to learn how to drive properly. Trying to learn how by listening to a bunch of wannabe racecar drivers on the internet is just a waste of time since you will get 100 different and contradictory instructions.
