Believe it or not, this is a relatively easy and straightforward job. There are several precautions to take, and you want to prepare well, but the actual process can be done in 10 minutes or less.

I needed to address leaking fuel and it turned out to be a failed or improperly reinstalled fuel pump gasket--result of installing upgrade fuel pump for JRSC and upgrade injectors. Having decided that I needed to put eyes on the pump assembly, I confirmed that was the likely source of the leak and had to educate myself on the removal and re-installation procedures. They are not hard.

Long story short, while there are several steps, they're relatively easy / not complicated. Just break it down into individual steps and take your time. I suggest buying a new assembly gasket since they seem to be one-time use items, and have some additional sealant on hand to reinstall the cover plate over the whole assembly.

There's a thread I started in this forum to ask for guidance, and I updated with my experience. Seriously, it may be fiddly, but it's about as straightforward as jobs on this car can be. And I ain't a mechanic!

Edit: Faulty memory, I didn't start the gasket-fix thread, but it looks like I ended it! http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73703

Did you read my link at the top of the page there Pac?

Most injected motors moved the filter into the tank *before* the fuel pump.
Both my bikes have the same configuration too.

They're running much higher fuel pressures now and the pump tolerances are much tighter than they used to be on an old TR4 or 55 chevy.

On the twins, we've got an additional HPFP after the one in the tank to push the direct injection.
Imagine what would happen if there was an inline Harbor Freight filter hose clamped into that line.

Thought the same thing when I bought my 2004 boxer cup replica with its fuel cell, submerged pump and filter. Ignored it and it's still running perfectly.

Four batteries mind you

So long story shorter. Did you replace a filter, at what mileage and did it warrant it. i.e., was it dirty/blocked?

Considering that the fuel filter and fuel pump are in tank and you have to remove the back seat and metal cover above the carrier just to get to the tank, I don't think this could be done in 10 mins. You then have to open the tank, remove the pump carrier, take the canister apart etc.

I agree, you wont be able to replace the filter in just 10 mins. Removing the tank cover will take 10 mins, How I hope they locate the filter in the engine bay just like with the older cars.

I'm actually surprised that no one has made a kit to relocate the fuel filter. My Tacoma had the same fuel pump with fuel filter assembly that they claimed was a lifetime filter.....yeah ok. There was a company that made a kit that relocated the fuel filter and upgraded the fuel pump, I ended up doing that when I supercharged the truck.

Bump from the dead.

Is fuel filter replacement necessary? I just turned over 77,000 miles. No issues, still getting good MPG. Oil from the last oil change did smell a little more like fuel than normal...

Don't want to tackle this job just to see that the filter isn't clogged. Perhaps a quality fuel cleaner additive every now and then would be ok?

Also, where you guys finding the maintenance schedule? My owner's manual doesn't have one.

If you historically get your fuel from quality, high volume, stations you should be fine. If there is nothing to filter out then there is nothing to clog the filter. Stuff doesn't magically appear in the tank. I personally will be leaving it until I have some sort of indication it is clogging.

No doubt this will have differing opinions though.

I wouldn't bother to replace the fuel filter, unless it was clogged (car starts to sputter because of fuel starvation).

IF you think you smell gas in the oil ...... and there is, I doubt it is due to a dirty fuel filter.

As far as additives, if adding them makes YOU feel better, go ahead (I doubt your car will notice a difference .....).

The maintenance schedule on my 2013 FR-S came in a separate booklet from the drivers manual and it was called "Warranty & Maintenance Guide".

If you don't have one, I believe it can be viewed on line.

Thanks for the responses bros.

Yeah, I'll probably hold off on replacing the filter. Considering dumping a bottle of Gumout Multi-System Tune Up in the gas tank... Not sure though. Everything seems to run great. Just dips pretty hard when the AC kicks on, but no hesitations or anything. Just bought the car from the first owner who traded it in at 70K miles. Hopefully he used good 93 octane the whole time lol. The car seems pristine in every other aspect so I don't see why not... And he spent the money on an Optima Yellowtop and decently expensive Pirellis.

And thanks, I'll try looking for that guide.

NO! Don't dump anything in your fuel. There is nothing that needs to be cleaned and you can do more harm to the seals and system than good. About 99% of the effect of additives is placebo do to some really good marketing over the decades.

So I've been looking and I don't even see a part number for the filter or a rebuild kit for the fuel pump assembly. The maintenance instructions mention replacing the o-rings.

FT86 Speed Factory has a video on how to pull this all apart for the Velox Fuel Starvation door. If I was going to pull this apart (getting fuel level sensor error). I would replace the fuel filter and install the Fuel starvation door.
