I have a story for you. This will be along post.

Once upon a time there was this young guy who loved cars and dreamed of racing cars. Let's call him Paul. Paul had a few years experience with autocross, solo, and a few driving days with an instructor on the big tracks where he lived, but he wanted to take it to the next level. He wanted to "wheel to wheel" race. He saved his money and enrolled in a week long track course to get his track card.

At his class, he met a guy who was 15 years his senior. Let's call him John. John and Paul found out they only lived about a mile from each other. John shared the same passion to race. During the week they became friends. They both graduated and got their cards. Now they both lacked a racecar.

One day at the track they ran across a car for sale. A 1963 split window Vette full blown race car, welded doors, full cage, completely set up for B Production class racing with a pos rickety old trailer. Paul had a garage to store and work on the car, and John had a giant LTD wagon with tow package to haul it. They would take turns driving. They somehow begged, borrowed and stole and managed to buy the car. They made a good team.

They ran the car their rookie year entering as many races as they could afford. They did well, both improving, and were so happy when they could remove the "R" off the car. They continued to run the car together for a few seasons. Then John met a girl. Let's call her Yoko.

John fell hard for Yoko and asked her to marry him. She agreed to marry him only if he stopped racing. She said it scared her too much. John reluctantly agreed and wanted out of his half of the car. Paul couldn't afford to buy him out, and couldn't find another partner, so the car was sold. As you could imagine, Paul was not happy with John, and didn't care much for Yoko. What kind of woman makes a man have to make a choice like that?

John never raced in any form again. Paul went back to autocrossing and solo with a few street cars he owned over the next decade or so, with an occasional fun track day. He won a few tropheys, and had fun, but never did that level of racing again.

Fast forward to today...

John is now 70 years old, and is a rich widower. Yoko lost her battle with cancer a couple years ago. Paul and John meet for a beer to talk of old times. Paul noticed how John's hands tremble as he reaches for his beer. John shows Paul a picture of a racecar. It is their old car. He tracked it down it ended up in some rich German guy's collection in Germany. They both smiled. John then showed Paul a picture of a 1990 something NASCAR that was setup for the vintage circuit for sale for $50k. "You want to start racing again?". Says John. Paul says no, those days are in the past. " You have a ton of dough, just get it yourself", says Paul to John.

John tries to get his track card back, but his doctor will not sign off. It is too late. Don't be John.

Ahh, poor sapp, ... that reminds me of a car I split with a friend back in the day. Still have it. Not worth much beyond the memories, and I never got it out on a track. Maybe I'll get some new foams and give it a spin some day, there's this nice indoor facility not too far away... (oh, did I mention it's a 1/10 classic Bolink)

Also tells the story of why I'm not out on the big tracks...
