Yes it can. Not always smoothly though.

When I turn the engine ON while the car is up on jack stands (4 wheels off the ground):
1) With the clutch pedal fully pressed, if I nudge on the shifter 1-2mm in ANY gear direction, the driveshaft starts to spin.* I don't even need to put it in gear, just a slight nudge in any gear's direction.
2) The only time the driveshaft is NOT spinning is when the shifter is in the middle neutral position.

With the car off jack stands (4 wheels on the ground) and the engine is running:
Shifting into any gear is impossible

*I still have the center console off so I can see down through the floor to know when the driveshaft actually spins.

Shouldn’t the car be able to shift into any gear easily when off regardless of the clutch pedal being in or not?

That could be the case. It's second nature for me to work the clutch pedal whenever I'm shifting regardless if the engine is running or not, so I've just never done it before.

I just checked on my car; I can put the car into any gear without depressing the clutch when the car is off.

Just got back to working on my car again today. It shifts fine with the engine off & no clutch pressed.

Seems like that would rule out any transmission gear problems.

Can you have a friend try to push the fork manually while you try to put the car in gear to rule out the clutch slave cylinder being bad or incorrect?

There is no chance the pressure plate is on backwards? Usually will only fit one way but I’m trying to think of something.

Not possible to put the plate on backwards but maybe the disk could go in backwards.

I like the idea of manually moving the fork though. You would need to find some way to pry on it though because I doubt you could do it by hand without some mechanical advantage. Just be careful not to bend it.

I just can't think of much that could go wrong inside the bellhousing. I was thinking maybe he didn't get the retaining spring clipped under the pivot properly but you can't really put the thing together if it isn't hooked because the fork would just fall off. To me it seems like it has to be something related to a bad slave. He's got to be frustrated as hell by now.

I experienced similar symptoms to the OP and some of the other posters here. Adjusted the clutch, replaced the slave, and the problem still existed -- issue started 5k miles after I installed an ACT clutch.

Never solved it and ended up moving on to a '17 BRZ.

8 days and counting... working on my car

Yea that fork is tough to move by hand. Don't think I could leverage anything in there with enough force.

I just picked up another OEM slave cylinder from the dealership. I'll try to install it first to see if it helps at all.

I've ordered a forged fork too, coming in tomorrow. If the slave cylinder doesn't help, I'll wait till tomorrow to continue..
ugh, 9 days and counting......

AAAAAGGHH!!!!

There goes the bolt for the hydraulic line on the slave cylinder.
F**king Murphy's Law I swear.... applies every time I work on my car.

Anything that can be mucked up, I'll muck it up.
That's what I get for being impatient.. and using a 2ft-long wrench to tighten 14mm bolts.

Yeah it only needs 13lbs. The DIY was fairly accurate in that you snug it by hand and then do another half turn. That is about how far my torque wrench went before it clicked. If you aren’t using new washers it would take less than a half turn because the washers were already crushed.

Man you aren’t having much luck with this project.
