No its not illegal in US. My Mercedes has it standard. So does most BMW and Audi sold here.

Just a thought but does anyone else think that the rear fog light itself is legal but the very low height of it is what causes it to be illegal. We all know the US has random laws about how high headlights can be and how high the third brake light can be.

I didn't say it was illegal. I just said the US models of the FR-S and BRZ don't have the light built in. Maybe you meant to quote somebody else?

Yea, it may be illegal because of the placement, but I see plenty of cars now with rear fog lights, so I don't think they are illegal.

It's technically illegal to have the rear fog light (or really ANY fog lights) on during fair weather conditions. I doubt you'll find a cop who will ticket you for it, though. The lights are aimed in such a way that they can be distracting to drivers, especially rear fog lights. Rear fogs are aimed directly at driver eye-level so as to increase visibility in foggy conditions (as you would expect, given their name).

Wiring up a light that was intended to be used as a rear fog light as a brake light is a super d-bag thing to do. I see cars all the time with the rear fogs wired up as brake lights and they are bright, obnoxious, and make you look like a tool driving around. But hey, do whatever you want to your cars

Mini Cooper has an option for them in the US

Thanks. I figured that out later and posted this. If I get fogs, I'm going to hook it up. Waiting to see how much the OEM ones are going to be.

Are you talking about the OEM front fogs in your post?

just as an fyi, on F1 cars the light on the back doesn't actually flash, its a static light thats constantly on. The reason behind why you see it flash on TV/videos of F1 cars is due to the fact of how LED's work and that they have a 'refresh' rate like a tv/monitor. LED lights are technically flashing so fast that it looks like a constant light where in reality they are actually blinking. Most video cameras will capture footage which is usually slower frames per second than the refresh rate so it simulates the lights flickering/flashing. Same reason why people think the Bugatti Veyron tail lights flashed in videos online.

If you record video of LED lights (for example an Audi LED DRL or Lexus LED's or Merc LED DRL's and you move the camera around a bit, during playback the lights will look like they are flashing.

I'm kind of hoping someone comes out with a kit (hint, hint) so we can convert to a fog light or brake light. Seems silly to waste such an opportunity with it.
