BTW, on the rare times someone else has done my changes it has always been overfilled which can be bad.

welp, back in the day, I did do all my own maintenance, yep, for 50 some years ..

Then at about age 70, I figured that it was more fun to drop the keys on the counter and let my buddy up at the local auto shop do the job, while I drink a cup of coffee, have a smoke and read part of an auto magazine about cars I can't afford.

Today I installed my stitched leather gauge hood. Now it finally matches the rest of my interior. Only piece left to replace is my existing two piece radio trim/center dash inlay thingy with the later one piece version that's covered in red stitched pleather.

I was too cheap to buy a premade gauge hood, so I just bought a piece of leather that had been precut/stitched off of Amazon for 1/3 of the price and glued it to my existing gauge hood. I think it came out half decent.

humfrz has been too old to work on his own car for longer than most of us have been old enough to drive.

Been working on my wife's Camry the last few weeks. Cleaning up to reinstall the battery, I saw why it mysteriously started leaking out the positive post. A year ago, I turned it over to the dealership for their their sooper dooper transmission-flushing rig. The asshole tech used a screwdriver to yank off the connector and tore up the seal around the post.


On the up side, I think that last week I finally found a machinist more than worth his salt.

Well, to me, that's the key. For the past 20 years I have been taking my vehicles to the same local shop. I've got to know the manager(s). I always request the same technician to work on my vehicles. They allow me to go back in the bay and chat with the tech about whatever I want done.

Have no trouble gluing leather parts its getting them pre-made in double stitch that is hard to find.

l any better, when I have the oil changed in my car, I mark the old filter before I take it in. Then, after the oil change, while the car is still in the lot, I check to make sure the filter has been changed.

In addition, I check the oil dip stick to make sure they put the right amount new oil in and it was in fact new oil. I also look under the car to make sure there isn't any oil dripping from the drain plug -

I checked the dip stick a block away. I didn't want to look like like a jerk. The dipstick was 1/4" above the full. Which is better than it was before, from memory it was a 1/2" above the full when I brought it in.

The oil looked new. Forgot to check under the car a block away, but...there's no oil dripping on my driveway. The one thing I should have looked at is if they put a crush washer on the drain plug.

You made it sound like a no-name cheap part in the previous post. Redline makes all the interior pieces for our cars. Nice quality stuff.

I didn't mean to make it sound like their stuff was knockoff junk. What I meant was I could buy a gauge hood that already had some leather glued to it for $90, or save about $60 by buying their product and gluing it on myself.

By "came out half decent" I meant that I think I did a pretty good job gluing it on, not that the leather or stitching was "half decent". The product I bought was very high quality. My only complaint was they folded it when they stuck it in the envelope so it arrived with several creases in it.
