Not really counting on them at this point to up the ante with Mazda as they will probably move on and focus on the Supra.

Mad that Toyburu with the TS and Sti editions just added more weight with bracings and wings and did nothing to address power/weight

I'd probably have an ND if it came out 2 years earlier... Then again, I'd probably be wishing it had more cargo space and kicking myself for not getting the FRS instead lol.

My argument is that there isn't a lighter 4 seat RWD car out there than the twins. One of the main reasons the Miata is lighter is because it's so tiny. The wheelbase on the BRZ is 10 inches longer. The Miata is a bit lower and narrower, and just over 12 inches shorter.

Mazda probably will never make a 2+2 Miata (I wish they would), but if they did, I'd bet the weight would be similar to the BRZ
Yeah couple. Haha.

There are always qualifying and theoretical points to make but that always boils down to "things would be different if they were different"

I would rather Toyobaru made a 2-seat version of the 86. Delete rear seats, shove the rear wheels forward ~10" and make it a hatchback, you could easily have a 50/50 ~2600-lb fixed-roof sports car with way more utility than a Miata. Boom, modern 240Z. Toyota could call their version the 2000GT...

There was already the RA Racing trim in Japan. They figured most Americans are overweight anyway by Japanese standard, otherwise they would have included some body hugging Recaros.

Toyota and Subaru / STI would never know how to do a true lightweight sports car, they are too obsessed with trying to beat the Germans.

10" shorter wheelbase would perhaps make the overall length 10" shorter as well. I would guess it'd be closer to 2500lb without the rear seatbelts, rear seats, less body metal, shorter driveshaft, shorter exhaust, shorter fuel lines.

I would splooge for this.

Toyota just now announced a GR package for the 86. guess what all its adds is more rice wings front spoilers ect and jacks the price and weight up

I'm not so sure. There's like a 400 lb weight difference the two. That's a lot, even if you stretch the wheel base 12 inches.

Man our cars are soo toast. Jalopnik article says they can run on 87 octane. I can see a simple tune on 93 octane and they will be close to 200hp on a 2400lb chassis

I have a ND Miata and it definitely pulls timing on 87 octane. The rated horsepower is on 91 octane. I'll try to dig up the post from Miata.net.
