I tend to think that the gold plan is worth it on the recent turbo Subarus except for the Forester, which is considerably de-tuned hence buying some safety margin. Those turbo Subarus, however, were blowing engines left and right, right from the start.
Reliability of the BRZ is yet to be determined.

I bought the 7/70 warranty, it's transferrable and backed from SOA. Also you can cancel and get a prorata refund. I would generally say no to a warranty, but I'm risk averse on this large purchase. I plan to get the next gen brz before my extended warranty is up.

That said - tomorrow I'm gonna have the dealer appraise my other Subaru and I'm gonna ask what kind of refund I'll get on my current gold plan. If it's based on the whole 7 years - I'll post here. I expect it to be based only on the 4 years not covered by basic warranty.
According to my dealer, the extended warranty covers some things that the manufacturer's warranty doesn't cover.

Aren't normal warranties just engine and drive train?

My dealer was trying to sell me the extended warranty and pulled out a blown turbo from under his desk saying how it was like a 6000 repair for blown turbo. I asked him with a huge shit eating grin if my car had a turbo.

None of which are high-tech or new to the world. If by 30K car will be giving any problems (30K - first major service), then and only then it makes sense to look into extended warranties. Or to consider an upgrade, which I don't think will be necessary.

Realistically, the only major f-up so far was high pressure fuel pump being noisy for some when used with 10% ethanol (US) gasoline. Toyota-Subie should take care of it.

this is kind of off topic, but does the floor mats come with the car or do they charge extra for it?

They are standard equipment. That does NOT include the trunk mat though, which you can buy online for much cheaper.

It's not high tech but we have no idea how long they'll last. And not being high tech doesn't mean it won't cost a boat load of cash to fix if need be.

If they offer me a good price for the warranty, I think I'll take it. New motor with probably expensive parts. I liked to do my own work on my cars when I was in school, but with a new full time job I have to evaluate how much my time is worth. It may pay off to have the dealer do warranty work rather than take off time from work to fix something. Also this will be my daily driver and the warranty provides a loaner vehicle if I need it when my car is being serviced.

That might be the part of ext. coverage not covered by basic warranty. Unless Subaru recently decided to mandate loaners for all their dealers. This used to be voluntary and not many dealers participated.
