Been in AUS passenger side is facing away from other cars driving by so realistically my driver door should have it, but i see where you're coming from.

Mine was on my passenger side as well and it still faces away from the other cars just in the opposite direction. Was a stone thrown up by a truck I was passing.

Wow - sorry _ as you may have realised I'm not a forum regular and obviously need to check this more often !

Thanks kindly for all the responses.

I have uploaded a pdf attachment with photos of the defect areas for reference.

Sounds like I'm not the first to have BRZ/86 paint problems. For such a generally high quality brand as Subaru / Toyota I'd be very surprised if they don't investigate this for their own QA regardless of how my case ends up.

Cheers - and sorry for slow reply !

Those are certainly not the chips the rest of us are talking about. There is almost guaranteed to be an outside influence causing that. Do you live where there are a lot of seagulls?

I certainly think it's a defect.

Even if it is an 'outside influence' (and I realise this next question is difficult to answer) what should a consumer 'normally' expect from the product?

I.e. what should the paint be able to withstand w.r.t. bird liming etc. I repeat that I just can't accept that my car has so many severe defects spread all over the bonnet and roof after just 123 days and 1,200km. It seems totally ridiculous.

In terms of seagulls - no - I don't live near the coast. I'm in a region of Australia that does have possums; however, my wife has a new Mazda CX-5 and this is parked next to the BRZ in our driveway. Her car has no such damage - which suggests it's not some animal causing it as you would expect damage to both cars.

It's definitely a defect, there's no way a cluster of rocks can hit the same place like that. Possibly vandalism? Brake fluid will destroy paint and looks just like water.

Take it to a body shop and ask them for an opinion. You may be able to use that to fight back cause that is not normal.

Yes - I'm seeking a written qualitative opinion from a paint specialist (in addition to the other quantitative tests I'm seeking) - I plan to send this along with I'm story / photos to Subaru Global in Japan. Even if this isn't resolved in my favour in Australia - I sincerely hope that Subaru International look at it seriously as part of its normal QA.
I will def let you know where this ends up - but I suspect it has a few months to run yet.
Thanks again for your comments.

Ya, @staplesja , I'm also thinking along these lines.

I reckon that either the paint wasn't applied properly when the car was first painted …. or someone threw some chemical on your car that ate through the paint.

Did this happen gradually or over a period of time …. ??

Either way, about the only fix is to have the car repainted.

Come back.

@staplesja Do you have the hi-res images? I have having trouble seeing the subsurface. This looks like a problem with the primer, but I can't really tell what I am looking at except splotchy paint. Also would like to see a pic of the entire car.

Please find a multimeter and check the resistivity of the surfaces. Use the barrel of the probe, not the tip, as the tip can do damage. Please report for the grey surfaces and for the intact paint surfaces against body ground in ohms.

<-- works in the pretreatment industry, knows marginally more than the average bear about this crap
