So I got my car back today. I filed a formal complaint to Toyota Corporate three weeks ago when this issue occured & they help tremendously with lowering the price of the repair. I greatly appreciate their customer service.
Overall, the dealership only replaced ONE cam sprocket, and they did a bad job of re-sealing the front end of the engine. I was able to drive no more than 5 miles away when my TCS, CEL & battery lights came on. I then noticed a considerable amount of smoke from behind the car & flowing up under the hood. I immediately pulled over & shut the car off. I got on the ground & it was pouring oil. After some phone calls, I had it towed back to the dealership & they gave me another rental. At this point, I can't trust these mechanics at this dealership anymore. I'll be making calls to the service manager & Toyota Corporate. I believe I need a new engine, or a new car, or some sort of money to cover the value of my FRS.

I purchased two of 22765AG511 from ebay to use in my 2013 MT BRZ. Both came out of wrecked cars with about 30k miles. I used Techstream to change the VIN numbers. Theres a good write up on the swap on here.

Any reason I'd still get the P0016 code even after replacing the cam gear sprockets? I've swapped OCVs and Sensors around in the past. Or does it take some mileage for the ECU to remove this code permanently?

From what I've read & experienced, you'll need to replace the ECU.

Hmmm... This is where techstream and the manual slew function would come in handy. The servos can individually be toggled to check them. It's really handy.
BTW, I heard from my friend that moved. He went back to driving it and hasn't had any issues since we last exercised the spool valve.

P0016 on a 60k mile car

Techstream can’t fix your problem, it’s simply for diagnostics. What Techstream allows you to do is manually advance or retard the timing for testing purposes. There is a TSB around here somehwhere that basically tells you to advance the cams until the car stalls which proves that they are at least working. You can get an OBD2 adapter that is compatible with Techstream on amazon for $18. Some of these cables come with Techstream but normally older releases. It’s not had at all to locate the latest release with google. The software is easy to use and is a great tool to have. The Tactrix cable works with Techstream if you happen to have their cable. ^^^ Exactly. It has become an essential diagnostic tool. I was stupid. I already had the Tactrix and bought another j2534 device before I learned any better.

It will take many(as many as 5K per Subaru Tech line) for the ECU to relearn. You'll continue to throw the code and the ECU will use a fixed value for the cam gears(loss of power). This happens even before the code is thrown(CEL), as long as it's a pending code. Experienced this first hand and finally changed the ECU. No issues since.

At this point, I don't want to buy ANOTHER ECU. Should I just buy new Sensor(s)? OCV(s)? Or rub my magic Genie bottle for a few more wishes? |
