86 dct burning smell when downshifting to 1st to slow down
86 dct burning smell when downshifting to 1st to slow down. Could this be the clutches inside the dct or the tranny fluid overheating or is my excess oil leaking somewhere during the throttle bleeping? I do enjoy downshifting with this tranny.
The oil is about 1/3" over the full on original oil. Fyi |

If you oil is only 1/3" above the hole that isn't the issue either. As said early in this thread it is probably just the new car oil burning off. You just smell it at low speed because it isn't blowing away behind you.

There are both clutches and brakes in the AT. They do heat and slip, but not on downshifts. ...or do they? Not outside the realm of possibility.

Just because the TCU doesn't allow the engine to overrev doesn't necessarily mean the first gear clutch/brake/whatever can't get hot from repeated hard engagement. I've never done it but if a downshift into first isn't preceded with a solid rev match, shit will eventually smoke. Ask owners of the Honda H5.

I also assume that the torque converter doesn't lock up from 2nd to 1st when shifting, which means there's no wear and tear in the torque converter because it's just rotating liquid correct? If yes, the wear then is all happening inside the transmission on the brakes/clutches or there is no wear and tear when shifting from 2nd to 1st and the throttle blips?
