My new hobby of traveling to the West Coast every few months (if we carry through with our plan for October it will be 4 trips in a year) could easily buy me a weekend toy. Sombody that drops a few hundred dollars a month on golf could buy themselves a Lotus with ease. A car is just a more in your face hobby than most since all the money spent is gathered in one spot for everybody to see (and judge).
So so true. Well said.

My wedding cost about $800.

Oh, the wedding itself is not that expensive. It's the reception that gets you. And all the stuff adds up.

Also, from what I gather, your situation was different than mine.

That was the total with reception and all.

Keep in mind those are 1981 dollars.
Sister made wedding dress $30
My tux rental was free
Hall was free since uncle was a member of the lodge.
Meal for 100 people at $4 each.
Church fees and licence was under $100
Three free drinks for each guest rounded out the costs.

Lol yeah, inflation and other factors makes 3-4k the bare minimum for that if you are lucky enough to have connections, not including rings (engagement and bands). Obviously minimizing cost wasn't our chief concern.

Also, we aren't exactly poor and don't spend money on much else, so there's that.

In other news, a Pacific coast tour (of continental US) is looking likely for honeymoon travels. Shes never seen the Pacific Ocean. Probably going to start in San Diego and work upwards. Problem is it's a lot of driving of we want to do the whole thing in a week. Too much to do, too little time to do it.

It'll be over soon. Then the absurdity of all the other crazy, made up obligations of civilized life will make this one seem perfectly acceptable.

It was a Saturday and I was in the garage working on the project. My wife was in the house visiting with a friend. The friend's husband was gone golfing for the weekend.

The friend asked my wife why she "lets" me spend on cars. And my wife said something like:

"That's his thing. He doesn't golf or go out at night. I know where my husband is and what he is doing. He is in the garage playing with cars. Do you know where your husband is and what he is doing? "
Yep, pretty much true.

Reminds me of several back-in-the-day stories.

This one sticks out at the moment.

On sunny weekend summer days, back in CT, I would sometimes take my sons (one at a time) on my dirt bike and we would go off cross country on an adventure. On my old topo map of the area, I pegged an old mica mine.

I soon found out that the only way to get to it was through a locked gate. So, I saw this cabin down the road a piece and stopped in to ask who might have the key and if I could access the property to get to the old mine.

This young, good looking woman, came to the door. She mentioned that she lived there alone and went and opened the gate so we could ride back to the mine.

This became a favorite destination for our bike rides till one day my son mentioned to his mother that "daddy had a girlfriend up in the mountains".

Welp, that ended those "adventures" .......

THE END
