I think you missed the only point of my post.

Again with the distortion. In the context of comparing it to the AE86 they are both RWD, 2+2, coupes. If one is not considered a sports car then how is the other? A case could indeed be made that the AE is actually a hot hatch but that means we are breaking down the family trees into smaller and smaller subdivisions. If we want to play the subdivision game than the current 86 is a GT car. In fact it is even called such in some markets and trims. If we broaden the definition of sports car to include the hot hatch and GT cars then yes it is most certainly one. Since everybody likes to define the term in what most suits their ideals then saying anything is or is not a sports car can be a slippery slope.

Yeah the MR2 and ZN6 are both sports cars, but the MR2 is a mid-engine, 2 seater without any kind of practicality at all. One of the biggest priorities for the ZN6's development was that it could handle the majority of daily driving situations.

I never implied the Corolla was a sports car though

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck can we not consider it a duck?
I have no attachment to the thing nor have I ever seen one much less drive it but it still appears to have sports car driving written all over it. At least in the performance trims. The base model is every bit the Corolla econbox you say.

Not even the hot hatch argument holds since there was also a coupe version. Aside from a few decades, I'm not sure how different they really are. Live axle and inline engine are different but then what?

One was designed from the ground up for performance. The other was designed from the ground up as a $7K econobox, then had parts swapped and added to provide additional trim levels. That they both ended up with similar superficial configurations is irrelevant. A bat will never be a bird, despite both having wings.

You can call or define the AE86 whatever you like, but fact is that it had a great rally and drift heritage.

And so has the BRZ. That is exactly my point.

Ah but both fly!

I really am totally on the fence on this and neither side has convinced me one way or the other.

I don't know, I drove my '85 MR2 for 160,000 miles, many of them falling into the "practical" realm. Heck, I brought my oldest son home from the hospital in mine when he was born. Of course, rules were a bit different then.

The only real connection I've ever seen between the AE86 and the current 86 was those made by Marketing. Yes, they have similarities, but the 86 shares those similarities with a lot of cars.

I can "see" a better relationship with the 2000GT. Honestly, from a pure "heritage" standpoint IMHO, it should have been build by Nissan as a retro 240Z
