From what I can tell, the BlueTooth software isn't the best, and is not capable of dealing with devices that are BT5. It was horrible (though it connected) with my LG V30.

I upgraded to a Pioneer MVH-2300NEX so I could use Android Auto (also works with Apple's thing, the name of which escapes me at the moment).

I got no help at all from Subaru, though I barely tried since I wanted Android Auto anyway... Probably not really the kind of answer you want, but figured I'd share my experiences regardless.

Its ok, i just wondering if anyone has this issue. it just annoys me that my old phone works multiple times but the new one doesnt i have thought about a new head unit but its not worth it to just get a new unit just so i can use blue tooth i just hate the look of the cord handing around in the car.

I am having the exact same issue with my 17 BRZ headunit and the new iPhone 8 provided by my job. I cant play music over the cable, and bluetooth seems to be just as bad. I literally just ran into this, so it may just take some tinkering to find a work around. I will post if i find anything.

For me using the cord works sometimes if i turn the car on before the phone is plugged in it wont connect (therefor turn the car off and back on again)
even before i got the 8 whenever i had bluetooth on with my old phone and the 3G it will drop out it especially longer drives.
have you got the cord plugged directly in the head unit ? thats how i currently have it.

Yep, i have it plugged in. I try to not use bluetooth as it causes issues when the phone is also plugged in via cable (i like keeping my phone plugged in). Though i did try to see if using bluetooth fixes the issue (it didnt).

I found a workaround on youtube that works on my BRZ. Not sure if it will work on your 86 or not.
  • Plug phone in with usb cable
  • Open music app of your choice
  • turn on headunit
  • change input to AUX and restart music app
  • change input back to usb/iphone

It is a bit of a pain to do but it seems to solve the problem as the head unit plays nice with the phone until i shut off the car. Still looking for a more permanant fix.

ive done steps very similar to that but like you said something more permanent would be nice. im fine with just the cable it just looks ugly having a cord hanging around.
was thinking of hiding the cable in glove box and using my old phone to play all the music but living in a town where its like 35-40+ (95-104+) doesnt seem to be a smart idea.
ill keep looking myself for a solution hopefully someone or something will fix it.
