Belt Tensioner Pulley Wobble - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Is this normal for the tensioner pulley to wobble between the power steering pulley and crank pulley? Could it be misfiring despite no code showing up? I'm concerned that it could be DI seals or the camshaft position sensor out of whack.

Some background - the car was warmed up at idle. I'm concerned since I had a p401 code pop up - misfire cyl 1. Since then I've swapped cyl 1 and 3 coils to see if that was the culprit and been driving on it for 2-3 weeks, no more CEL since then. I did have p351 code about a year ago - ignition coil malfunction, and replaced cyl 1 coil as a result of it. So swapping the newer cyl 1 coil to cyl 3 seems strange that it fixed the issue (so far). Thoughts?

Well, first off, I don't believe the pulley movement has anything to do with your past/present electrical problems.

I wouldn't worry about that much pulley movement ...... I'd just keep an eye on it.

Of course, @Ultramaroon would recommend replacing the idler pulley ......

Bubba would just give it shot of oil ......

If it was deviating out out of plane I'd worry a lot more.
Each cylinder does not provide exactly the same impulse in their cycle.
At an idle, the difference is exacerbated even more than at higher output.
The idler was put in there to smooth out exactly those impulse differences.

If you're tuning it, find out which system is under performing and boost it a little.

edit: It's not going to break anything.

It is doing exactly what it was designed to do. Zero issues there.

looks normal to me. Misfires on the other hand is not related to a pully.
If your still worried about replace it. It's cheap and a quick 10 minutes of your life. Unless it goes sideaways. Which it might. But that's just me.

Thanks for your input everyone, I just thought it was moving more than normal. I got a bit paranoid since getting the CEL's. Better safe to ask than sorry.

Nobody has really answered your second question though. If moving the pack seemed to work it may have just been a connection issue. Try moving it back again and see what happens.

Okaly dokaly. Working on the other cars this weekend, so prob wont get around to this one for another week or two. Hopefully I'll remember to keep you posted.
