It was only about 3 days. I have left in sit in the garage (with no OBDII adapter on it) and it will be fine for a couple weeks too.

I have the ELM 327.

Interesting - The OBD2 is supplied with constant power but I'm surprised there was such a parasitic loss associated with it.

FWIW - I run a Battery Tender - 480CCA or something. Largest one they offer.

I've found the OBDII adapter to be a battery killer as well.

With that said, I’d like to try a 245 Rival S 1.5 to see how it works out with the heat and shoulder wear.

Do you think the RE71 is the best tire for STX?

The Rival S has potential on the right surface with the right driving style. For low grip, RE71 still wins I think.

Example of surface and driving style? And did you mean “more” grip? I’m a novice driver so I’m still debating on how smooth my driving style should be. On my last autox run (and also my first time), my best time came on a more aggressive style.

I meant low grip, as in the surface - i.e. asphalt (low grip usually) vs concrete, though that's over simplifying a bit.

The Rival S is quite happy with slip angle and, I think, a more aggressive style. It also seems to prefer more heat - likely one reason it starts to really shine on concrete. I haven't cycled mine out yet so don't know how they perform over time. Given the areas I need work, the tire has helped me with confidence but may not be letting me drive faster.

The RE71 communicates a bit better and probably will be faster for a smooth driver - and on lower grip surfaces (which, by the way, includes rain and cold). I think it's a bit more forgiving over the edge when in a good temp range, but starts to lose that as it gets too hot and/or enough runs on the tire. It's particularly evident with some of the challenges in my driving.

Or, such has been my experience so far. Limited with the Rival S, a bit more with the RE71. One season on 245/40/17 RE71's, little life left in those. Two seasons on a single set of 255/40/17 RE71's, and they weren't quite to the wear bars. 4 events on 245/40/17 Rival S 1.5 so far.

For reference, I over-brake sweepers and tend to unsettle the chassis - I'm still working on smooth and subtle inputs with the feet. If I had a high HP point-and-shoot car on Hoosiers I might be driving just fine... There are places my approach works out well (really tight pin turns occasionally, and slaloms with a high-speed run-up) relative to the season co-driver I had last year. Much to improve. First I have to get past the jitters from the abrupt end to last year's season.

BFG's are said to be better on concrete, like at Lincoln. The RE71R'S don't need heat in them really, like the BFG's. But, get greasy quicker.

Cjd summed everything up pretty nicely.

Both tires are proven winners at the National level, even today. I think both tires are equally as fast, after using RE71R's for over a year and the Rival S 1.5 for over a year now.

I think I am going back to the RE71R for this season though.

Thank you guys for all the input! Sounds like the Bridgestones is a solid choice! Gotta be better for AutoX than my current Hankook V12s that I ran with. I had some idea on how important tire comp was, but I guess you never really know until you go sideways towards some cones!

If you let one of your local hotshoes drive your car and you can match or beat his time on your stock tires, then I'd say spend $$ on the pointy end tires. As a novice driver you will waste money on the $$ tires.

You can’t go wrong with either BFG or Bridgestone. If you tend to drive with slip angle, BFG. Or if you are a precision driver, Bridgestone.

One of the reasons I chose Bridgestone is because I could buy 5 RE71’s for the price of 4 Rival S 1.5’s.

$50 bux a tire. BFG contingency is better though, from a dollar standpoint (for Pro's at least).

I am running Bridgestone this year again because of the cheaper tire....

And well, mostly because the contingency sticker is easier to put on
