Toyota 86 on Speed Bumps Inquiry

Hello guys,

Just purchased a Toyota 86 last Feb and it is scheduled to arrive at around June or July this year, it's my first time owning a sports car. #excited

Nonetheless, I would like to ask how the stock 86 deal with speed bumps on the street? I'm expecting to deal with a lot of speed bumps in the near future as this would be my everyday car. I've driven normal sedans before and they don't seem to have any problems on normal speed bumps, well if it's too big I usually approach it an angle.

To the experts and to the long-time owners of the 86, can I apply the way that I drive a normal sedan, say like a Honda accord and a vios when approaching a speed bump? Of course if I spot an unusual speed bump, approaching angle would be the solution.

If left at stock height you will just need to drive like most sedans. It isn't really much different.


If you lower it even as little as an inch then speed bumps become your worst nightmare. There are some places I simply can not drive because I just bottom out on the bumps.

+1 for @Tcoat. I have some speed bumps I deal with on a regular basis, and while they may jar you around a bit if you don't take them slow enough, the car handles them fine in stock form.

Always approach at an angle with an 86 if you can...will be much smoother experience. And everything will be fine as long as it's not lowered from stock ride height.

How high are your speed bumps that you have to angle over in a normal sedan???

Honestly, you might have to raise the suspension about 4 inches and get a larger diameter tire. Current 86's are sold as unworthy street cars and should only be seen driving on the Nordschleife.

I come from a slammed VW before my FR-S so I may have a different opinion but I have TRD springs that give (I think) 7/8's of an inch drop and I've never scraped or had trouble with any speed bumps. If it is really big I go at an angle though. The only thing to watch is the front of the bumper and curbs, it will hit if you are careless and just slam into parking spots without being aware.

Speed bumps ....... I reckon that depends upon what a Philippine speed bump is like. In my area, we seem to have two types ...... one being a wider speed bump, which my FR-S treats like a little "fun ramp". The other type is the narrow, steep kind, that are not to be taken at more than 2 mph, or they will jar the hell out of the FR-S's suspension.

I have found (with my stock height 2013 FR-S) the only clearance issues that I have to deal with are parking stops (as mentioned above) and driveways with a steep crown (in which the resonator in the mid pipe will scrape).

I am at stock height and have a lip, generally I take most speed bumps at speed without any problems. In fact I take them quicker that most suv drivers. I use to drive a van with a stiff suspension and found taking speed bumps slow was worst. Taking them quicker allowed the suspension to do its job instead of jarring the rest of the vehicle and rattling my teeth.

..think we gotta clarify which speed bumps we're all encountering..

I have 3 of these types of suckers on my way in and out of the complex I live in


..and it was a PITA without lowering springs on my first FRS and it is now even worse with them. I can't go more than 5 MPH over these without it feeling like I'm abusing the car..

my wheels fell off last i attempted to go over a speedbump, would not recommend 0/10
