Rotor rust not being removed by brake pads

During almost any kind of driving the front brakes work significantly harder than the rears due to weight transfer under braking. That's why your rear brakes are so much smaller than the fronts. It's not at all unusual.

If you went out and actively exercised your brakes the rears would clean up. By actively exercising I mean 10 or so consecutive hard pedal effort stops from 60 to 0. Just driving in traffic it'll take a while.

OK, if that really bugs you, I suggest you have the rear rotors "turned" ...... that will clean them up. While they are at it, have the rear brake pads replaced.

Do a couple hard slow downs 70-10, if they dont clean yea probably something goin on

This is correct. so what you need to do for then next week is drive backwards everywhere. Then you back brakes will become the front and do more breaking. If they are not clean after a week of this call insurance. They will total it.

Handbrake is drum based, won't remove rust.

Yep, OP is just new to automobiles, I reckon. And that's OK, all of us were new to automobiles at one time ....

The difference with brakes is that back in the day with drum brakes, we couldn't see (from the outside), whether or not the entire brake shoe(s) was making contact with the brake drum, so we didn't worry about it.

We didn't worry about it until the shoe(s) wore down past the brass rivets and the brakes screeched ...... or ....... the car wouldn't stop ......

Now ..... it can be OMG, OMG, there's rust on the rotors ..... I see it ....... am I gonna crash and die .......
