That's barely the case before the car is heat soaked and robbed of power but even if it wasn't the case, if that's the metric you're using to measure a car, the miata isn't what you should be looking at.

I would be much more inclined to buy a Miata if this was a weekend/summer toy.
2774/(2381/181)=210.8

So your decision would be changed if the FRS had an entire 11 more HP? It wouldn't make a good DD with 211HP? I don't know, you say your not a fanboy but I'm not convinced. Hahaha

I'd have lots of fun in a twin with 300hp or 400hp. Or 800hp. It would just be a very different car to drive.

Hah - yeah for sure, but I'm glad cars like the 86 and the Miata still exist, and manufacturers are standing behind them. There's something to be said for the driving experience they offer - giving them 300 or 400 hp would drastically change that experience. If that's what I were really going for, I'd just go out and buy a Porsche 718, etc.

What? You've lost me. My point was that power wasn't the issue for me.

Sorry, I thought you were saying you wouldn’t be interested in a power bump on the 86. I’m asleep today apparently.

I wonder if they will do anything to improve visibility. I checked out the Miata before buying the BRZ. I was so freaked out by the poor frontward and rearward visibility, and blind spots that a 747 could hide in, that I test drove it less than a mile before saying I had enough. Neat car, but that in and of itself did me in.

Wtf.... the mazdaspeed was awesome. Flyin' miata made some nice upgrade kits too for low cost.

Better bang for the buck than turboing a 1st gen IMO.

Mazda just released the new generation. It's about 4 years out from another update.

i just think they are worse than a regular miata for most of the things that makes the miata a good choice in the first place. the flyin miata stuff really did wake them up though i must admit. i dont think the mazdaspeed is any faster in a straight line than an nc or nd if i recall correctly either so its not like it transformed the car other than weight and giant ass rims.

True, but a ~20% power increase in a 2400lb car will still be noticeable. Not life changing, but noticeable.

Just like 50hp (~25%) on a 2800lb FRS is pretty noticeable.

Of course this depends on where exactly in the powerband that increase is going, but still. I think it's a nice move on Mazda's part.... if it's true.

Still prefer the 86 platform. It's a 3 seater in a pinch and I don't have to play Tetris packing golf clubs or groceries. And the lack of body roll is a plus.

Maybe down the line when I can afford to keep 2 cars.
