Am I right in guessing this is the reason why turbo'd engines tend to blow up more often? Also wouldn't the torque figure vary between different SCs? I think the E-Force has more shove down low than say a JRSC (don't quote me on this)

Yeah the prevailing theory is that turbo FA20's produce more torque earlier in the RPM range (and torque will often increase rapidly once the turbo spools), increasing the chances of bending a rod.

Positive displacement superchargers like the edelbrock produce more low/midrange than a JRSC, but still less than most of the turbo kits.

I wrote about this in a thread I made about switching from an FRS to a '16 STI.

If the only thing you really want from the FRS is more power, I'd just add the FI to the vehicle and then have everything you want. Though, I personally wouldn't care for any more than the ~250whp range and I'd be sure to add the appropriate supporting modifications to make sure everything stays in check.

If you want more power and then switch to a new chassis, you'll likely be happy with the increased power... but left wanting more in terms of the chassis.

For me, I just wanted something that was more practical and "ready to go" out of the box because I was tired of sinking $20k in performance mods on $25k cars. If all I wanted was more power, I would've kept the FRS. But power wasn't an issue. I had a '13 FRS with Tomei EL headers, GS intake, Nameless axleback, and an OFT stage 2 91 octane tune and was plenty happy with how it felt.

At the end of the day, it comes down to want you want/need from a vehicle... and what your end goals are.

Opinions-Keep and go FI or sell?

If you really want my honest opinion, both options are terrible financial decisions, especially if you go the newer car route. Do you need the FI or do you just want it? Can you see yourself with the FR-S five years from now still? Sure, if you have the money I guess it doesn’t matter.

Drive your Vibe for 3 or 4 weeks straight, then jump back into your FR-S and you’ll probably reconsider your desires. Or maybe not.

I highly suggest trying that though.

I love this...I’ve basically been back and forth with the decision because you are indeed correct both are terrible financial choices, I WANT to boost my ride I don’t NEED to boost my ride.

I’ll let you know what I decide next month when I ask the question again...lol

So I’m a bit new but I recently boosted my frs and have loved every minute of It. I have the option to switch between a high boost map and a low boost map. Also always cruise on low boost because it’s just a blast to drive. Not only does it zip around a corner and sit square but it takes off like a rocket when boost spools. (I think this has something to do with power to weight ratio lol) also because it’s turbocharged it responds like a an N/A car until boost hits. IMO as I know everyone’s situation will be different, it is an extremely fun car to drive. Also for reference low boost is around 315 and high boost is 414, and running E85. Just my 2 cents

Never know,

Toyota might drop a turbo 4 cylinder engine doing 255 hp in a car next year called t[he Celica that does exactly what the 86 does, except for the power and a little more weight

Just food for thought.

Well maybe not "next" year since there isn't even a concept on the table.

Well how far do you want to go back and how much money do you want to spend?

There's a lot of older cars. I've thought about going that route but don't have time for a "project" It would be nice though. I'm happy tinkering on the FR-S.

The only modern car I can think of off the top of my head is a Cayman. And it's twice the price with "upgrades" to the FR-S.

Also, I'm very tall. The Miata, 370Z (It's heavy too) and F-type are out... I have yet to try a Cayman.

All the correct answers. A+

Depending on what is out there when I retire in 5 more years it will be an F Type or Cayman for me. The FRS is the perfect "wear it out and throw it away" car until then.
I lost interest in maintaining old cars years ago so going with any of the normal list of "you should get a 20 year old SupersportsterGT10000S" is off the table.
