New Things on the 2017 Engines
Figured I would post some findings.
Back story, Customer purchased a built 2014 engine for his 2017, put all the 2017 sensors on the engine because the PIDs and programming at the ECU are different. You can not run a 2014 ECU in the 2017 car because of the LCD dash compatibility. Driver intake cam is a different part number for 1 so we are swapping that. Probably DI pump related but I will compare on removal. Additionally lots of Cam position errors. Here is why 2017 on TOP 2014 on BOTTOM

Interesting. Thanks for reporting your findings. I'm surprised that was even attempted as I'd much rather build off the newer, more rigid block.

Out of curiosity, what is the form factor of the exposed bolt heads?

Problem was putting a rod through the 2017 block, not salvageable

Not completely tearing apart both engines just compared Subaru part numbers between the 2 model years and differences are being swapped between 2014 and 2017.
There is a PDF floating around on all of the differences in 2017 including the reinforced block. But now I can visually see some differences

Would be helpful what requirements need to do for "bolt-on" swap, 2017 engine on a early model

I think visually seeing the differences is the most important part. sometimes the diagrams that are posted aren't even that good.

I wouldn't say it's cheaper just yet. OP is already having to swap a camshaft over, which puts a big dent in the savings for anyone paying for labor. Hopefully it works out, and I do understand having a blown motor on a +2017 might be a bit complicated at the moment without many cores floating around.

Here is the Driver intake cam differences
Same diameter and base circle. No change in lift or duration to the valves. DI pump lobe is much smaller in height on the 2017 They may have compensated in tuning or actually changed the internals of the pump bore for the shorter stroke. because it too has a different part number. Which means 2017 Pump on 2013-16 cam may operate at a higher pressure but this is just speculation.

Another thing I was thinking of is if we wanted a built engine and depending on who’s doing it are they using the 13-16 short block or the updated strengthend 17 blocks. With the differences that you have just shown here it would matter a grate deal for the project.

In the updates they said the rods received some kind of coating or something to strengthen them? Do the rods look any different?
