Certainly possible, but then you have cars like an early Boxster that aren't much more insulated than these, and with the engine basically about 10 inches away from the back of your head.....well, flat sixes sound pretty glorious so I don't think anyone would really complain about any of that at any RPM...

You should just trade your car in for a smooth and quiet Prius that keeps it's revs down and is relaxing to drive because it doesn't sound like a lawnmower. Would probably be a much better fit for you.

With the amount of cars and variable traffic conditions in NYC, I could argue constantly shifting to get in and out of powerband would put too much wear on my clutch and transmission. I'd rather stay in third and be able to go from 30 to 80ish without worrying too much. I'm usually stuck between 40 and 70 on the highways around here.

Plus, its more fun.

Kinda wish this was logged some where, but I'd bet at least 80% of my driving (time wise) is in gears 1 through 4. Sometimes 5, rarely 6. The only time I really just cruise in 6 is for those long road trips (3-5+ hours) where I'm 100 miles from the next exit and not surrounded by other cars.

Not hardly. I just don’t see the point of hanging out really got where there engine is resonating so much it sounds like rod knock. It isn’t the volume of the engine. It’s the shit sound it has. It’s awful. An S2000 at 4K sounds like it’s asking for more. The FA20 at 4K sounds like it’s ready to fly apart. It is what it is. Not saying I don’t enjoy the car.

See I find it “more fun” to do a blip and downshift before pulling than simply pressing my foot to the floor. To each their own though.

people and their engine noises ...it is all a heap of mechanical noises that virtually every single woman dislikes. the 86 feels and sounds like a machine, I would not have it any other way.

as for the OP, I almost never use 6th gear, I usually like cruising in 4th or 5th on the highway.

I'd say you're an excellent candidate for an engine swap and subsequent part out.

Otherwise, not sure what other reason there is to have the car other than enjoying its outer appearance?

If people think the 86 sounds good I can only assume it’s the first car they have owned. That or they have never driven an E36 M3, S2000, 911, etc etc. fun car but it ranks bellow a 1989 Civic with regards to engine sound.

what is a "good" sound? all engine noises to me are just that, just merely sounds due to things moving & exploding, trying to say one sounds "better" than another is so superficial. yes i get there are some very unique intakes & exhausts, like the lfa's v10 but it is still all noise. on a side note it is pretty amazing how expectations of cars have evolved...everyone was cool with having no insulation from the sounds and smells of their ponies and then fast forward 100 years later everyone is so picky with HP and sounds, something got lost along the way ^^

Yeah because engine sound is literally the only thing to consider when buying a car. I’m just an unbiased person. I’m no fanboy. I call it how I see it. The engine note isn’t a high point of the 86 or and Subaru for that matter. I knew that coming into this car but the pros far outweigh the cons on this car. Don’t worry I think your car is cool. 😉

For starts, one that doesn’t sound like it has rod knock off the showroom floor.

In my post before I listed a few cars I would consider to sound good.

I’d put the Carrera GT at the top of my list though.

Also, as I said already, it isn’t the volume that bothers me. It’s just how it sounds I don’t like. Trust me I don’t need insulation, used to drive a fully gutted GSR back in the day. That car however didn’t sound like it wanted to fly apart.
