but the 488 is not an automatic transmission, it is a dual clutch transmission they are not the same thing.

no clutch pedal = automatic. No h-shifter = not a manual trans

They can make it as fancy as they want, the car is still doing the work automatically for you.

still a manual gearbox the car may do the work for you but it still has clutches, anyone who thinks that manual transmissions are better than dual clutch gearboxes has never driven one. I do not get the oh you're not connected to the experience because you are not using your left leg to press a pedal.

Guy said it perfectly. If the car shifts for you or only needs a button press then it’s an automatic. Just because it has dual clutches doesn’t make it any less automatic. Also, you apparently know nothing about how dual clutch boxes work because they in no way at all work like a traditional manual box.

Do we really need another thread about manual vs auto though? How many times do we need a thread to explain that people don’t love manuals because they are better. They love them because they are more fun and more rewarding. Pushing a button to downshift isn’t as fun as doing all the steps required on a manual. And yes I have driven a dual clutch box (several actually). Boring! If you find a dual clutch more fun then you either haven’t driven a manual or haven’t learned all the driving techniques related to a manual. You are probably the type that presses the clutch to the floor and rolls to a stop. Yeah obviously they would be boring.

No, they are not. Read up on how a dual clutch box works. They have two gears engaged at the same time and simply swap out clutches to advance to the next gear. Obviously you can’t engage two gears at the same time on a traditional manual box without it turning into a grenade.

not all of them are dual clutch transmissions, hence why i did not say they are all the same.

....

So do you know what the term "automatic transmission" means?

Please tell me what it means, because apparently "automatically shifting transmission mechanism" has a completely different meaning for you.

Can we all just take a moment to appreciate the fact that this hasn't become some big flame war over auto vs. manual?

I was going off this statement that you wrote:
“still a manual gearbox the car may do the work for you but it still has clutches, anyone who thinks that manual transmissions are better than dual clutch gearboxes has never driven one”

The old Ferrari boxes were manual boxes that automatically shifted and so is the SMG but both of those are old now. Is anyone doing it this way anymore? Seems everyone has gone to dual clutch or just sticking with the old school auto tranny.

Regardless, if they shift for you they are boring.

It was inevitable.

To me an automatic transmission is connected to the motor via a crappy fluid filled drum.
