BRZ to Genesis Coupe
 

So around three months ago I left your ranks and traded in my 2013 BRZ for a 2015 Genesis Coupe 3.8 Ultimate. So I would like to share my experience and thoughts on this switch.

First I must say the Genesis is a gorgeous car inside and out. Being the Ultimate edition, it has all the bells and whistles. 19” wheels with Brembo brake calipers, rear spoiler, sun roof, beautiful tan leather interior and the Infinity sound system with nav. Big difference from the somewhat bare interior of the BRZ, which I get the reasoning behind it.

And boy can this car move. 348hp and 295 ft/lb of torque, it is a rocket. But with that said, there are some things I miss from the BRZ.

Without a doubt the BRZ is a much more nimble car, and much lighter too. I don’t feel as confident driving winding roads in the Genesis as I did in the BRZ. The steering in the BRZ is more precise and better road feedback compared to the Genesis. The Genesis sports an 8 speed auto transmission with paddle shifters. My BRZ also had an auto transmission. The paddle shifters in the BRZ are definitely quicker than the Genesis. And overall I think tranny shifts smoother in the BRZ. I am still getting use to how the throttle feels in the Genesis. The size of Genesis is larger which I am still getting use to. My last two cars were the BRZ and a Mercedes SLK before that. Both smaller.

In closing I really do love the Genesis. It is a good mix of performance and luxury. And you gotta love that 3.8 V6 under the hood. But I still have a warm spot in my heart for the BRZ. I appreciate even more what Toyota/Subaru were trying to achieve with the 86 platform. A true barebones driver centric sports car. And they nailed it perfectly!

If you had a manual you would have loved it even more (BRZ). I drove a Genesis and while it's a great GT the 86 platform is just too hard to beat for it's intended purpose.

The Genesis Coupe is a nice car, but more of a grand tourer than a nimble sports car (pretty much what you’ve observed). I owned a 2011 2.0t back when the Genesis Coupe first came out and my sister still owns a 2013 2.0t and she loves it. It’s kind of sad that Hyundai has nixed it, now they have no rwd performance cars left. I considered a 3.8 with a manual transmission in my recent car search, but every time one with decent mileage and a manual transmission popped up it sold very quickly.

Hyundai. That is enough.

And that means what?? Hyundai and Kia (I also have a Kia Sportage) have been making some damn fine cars lately. The quality of my Genesis is outstanding, and it has 33k miles on it. No rattles or strange noise and the interior materials are not cheap feeling at all. Same in my Kia.

Rumor is they will be coming out with a more luxurious coupe under the Genesis brand name now that they separated it from Hyundai.

Thanks for sharing...at my dealership we get Genesis as trade-ins for WRX’s, STI’s, and BRZ’s of course. I’ve driven some here and there.

They’re very different from BRZ’s. They are borderline into Pony Car territory but the ride is actually a bit refined at the expense of balance, nimbleness, and raw handling. So for someone who likes everything about the BRZ it may not be their cup of tea, but it will satisfy those who longed for more power and space that the BRZ couldn’t offer.

@Bluesman62 how do you find the electronic aids? I had a BK2 2.0T and my biggest complaint was that the TC/SC was so bad, it bordered on dangerous. Is the 3.8 any better?

Sure.

No complaints yet. But I am still in the learning phase as it were. Having all that extra power does keep you on your toes. At least with me. I have never owned a car with this much hp and torque, so don’t want to get too crazy.....yet!

Not really a rumour since Hyundai has said publicly that this is the plan. I will be watching closely when they do release the new branded coupe since it could be of interest to me.

I've thought about picking up a used Genesis Coupe 3.8L manual. Seems like a good mix of power and comfort. I'd use it as a DD and save the FR-S for weekend/track duty.

Did you consider the Mustang GT, Camaro SS and G37 also?
