I live in the GM world and they normally use a heavy duty spring that keep's the pressure on the door check that keeps them from wearing out. Even if they wear down there is so much pressure they stay propped open. The downside is the door pin bushings fail and require you to take the door off and replace the bushings. Then that spring requires a special tool to compress enough to reinstall it. I have actually broken 2 of those tools already they bend then the spring flies out at deadly speeds. So toyota uses a completely different door design but the door catches they use on all models is crap plain and simple they wear out fast. Now I have had 3 - 2006 scion XB's and 2 of them have had the door catch fail around 80k miles or less. In the grand scheme of things at least on the XB remove a door catch is waaaaaaayyyyyy easier then what you have to do on a lot of GM products but either way it sucks that it's pretty clear the design Toyota has used for 15+ years is pretty bad multiple vehicles have TSB's related to the door catch yet little has changed about the overall design.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I'm wondering if this is still an issue on the newest MY? Can anyone with a 2018 comment?

If so, can some manufacturer PLEASE design us some better door stop arms?! I would pay $100 to keep the fucking doors from closing on their own anymore. I've learned to deal with it but my SO is ready to set the car on fire from how many times the door's shut on her

I've tried wrapping various materials on the arm to make it thicker and/or add more friction but the grabber inside the door just rips everything off - there's not enough tolerance there for anything to be on the arm.

I would pay good money to have this solved too. On my sloping driveway, the doors seem to have an uncanny knack of holding open just long enough for you to think they will stay, then when you're not looking SMACK! right in the shin.

Surely there is someone on here who works at a wreckers and can identify the hold-opens from another car that will work? To my untrained eye, almost all these devices look very similar yet are designed for different weight doors.

Subsonic.

Door won't stay open?

Here is my fix. It’s working perfect.

https://imgur.com/gallery/ik6Y2

I wanted to use aluminum tape but couldn’t find mine at the time so I used duct tape. Of course the next time I was in the garage let ok’ing for something else I came across the aluminum tape. I’m thinking with time the duct tape will flatten out. If it does I will go with the aluminum tape.

No we're talking. It looks like you could also shim the rubber and nylon block out with aluminium sheet as well as relying on the thickness of tape to create the extra pressure needed.

Are they easy to remove, or does the door card have to come out first?

Door card has to come off first. It’s not bad at all though. Once the door is apart you just remove the two 10mm nuts and single 10mm bolt and the remove the stay check.

I removed the speaker to get my hand in there rather than pull the plastic barrier away from the door. I figured I would end up tearing the plastic if I tried to peel it back.

@ermax, that's pretty damn slick!

Yeah, the adhesive goo will squeeze/creep out from between the layers over time. I recommend making some shims out of an old milk jug or something.

Do you think the shims will accelerate the wear of the nylon blocks?

Great idea with the milk jug! Yes, I think the shims will accelerate the wear on the blocks. Luckily the stay checks don’t cuts all the much so at some point we can replace them and then shim them again.
