Is $1600 for a clutch replacement too much?
Was quoted $1600 to replace a clutch by a trusted family mechanic, does this sound right?

Either way parts included or no it seems a bit steep provided you are just doing stock parts and not some crazy over kill clutch.
stock clutch and pressure plate can be had for under $300 Throw in a couple more bucks to have your flywheel turned or at least checked for this job I would figure you have under $500 in parts. For a garage mechanic (someone working for cash in their own home garage) this job should be around $500 or less. For a shop I could see that stretching up around $800-$1000 depending on their overhead costs. |

You can have it done for about $350-400 in labor in my area, obviously shop prices change between locations, but it seems a bit steep, even using an aftermarket clutch going for about 500-600 would still be less than $1600. I think that's high.

That price sounds too high.
OEM clutch part should be around 230-250 I had my TOB and new clutch installed out the door at $621.60 Look how fast someone familiar can take out the trans: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...7&postcount=44 Either way man I suggest getting your TOB replaced since someone will be up in there anyway (TOB=$50). Also check your flywheel you may not need it resurfaced/replaced. I'm at 70k and my flywheel looked great. However be prepared to resurface/replace the flywheel if needed. |

I got the new 2017 TOB from Toyota for $17. $1600 is WAY too much.

I do the labor for $350 for locals, if that helps you get a gauge on the rest of the deal. A 'real' shop is likely closer to $450. These cars are pretty easy to do that job on, lift car, drain trans fluid, remove shifter, pull driveshaft from trans and hang on whatever you can, pull trans back and you're in like flynn. (flinn? idk.)
If that's the price with a full aftermarket (exedy stage 1, ACT HDSS, Southbend, etc,) clutch kit, new OEM or lightweight flywheel, velox clutch fork and pivot with OEM TOB, and a good gear oil like motul or amsoil, I don't think the price is that far off. That said, I doubt he's grabbing the 'full monty' enthusiast package.
