FRS direct injection fule pump problems.

Just wanted to give you all a heads up. I had to replace this pump today due to the fact it was making a loud chriping noise almost like a wet drive belt. The toyota reps came out to my work and listened to it. It only happens once the temp gets to around 140f. They explained it to me as follows. The pump has a washer inside of it which if not lubercated properly it will make that noise. They said that Japan gas is way better and has more lub in it the USA gas. SO the usa gas casued the washer to not be lubed properly. There is no known fix or TSB for this. i got a new pump but keep your ears open so you can catch it and report it. Its not a preformance issue jsut an annoying sound thats all. Hope this helps.
Im not sure if this would be directly related, but the very first time i heard an audible chirp was when i added 91 octane (instead of 93)

After a long drive without any issues (in traffic) went to gas station, added 91, started the car, and heard it.

I was just kidding, bro. Sorry.

First performance cars are an exciting moment. I envy you.

New cars are likely to have numerous smells. That's normal. Old cars, as they get some dirt on them, are also liable to smell once in a while. Sometimes the heat from the powertrain will bring them out.

From the sounds of sierra's report it seems that the engineers forgot that most people in the US only have 91 & did not test extensively for this =P

I can't wait to see when Toyota releases an official statement to address our concerns!

How sierra pointed out this only happening once temps reach 140f makes sense for why most people (my self included) only hear the chirping after a while of driving; what is also interesting about that statement is the insufficient lube in US gas causing the washer in the pump to start making noise; this could explain the differences of when people start hearing the noise (200mi or 900+ like others) as gas quality for 91 can even vary depending on gas station/ additives; I only started hearing the noise past 1k mileage using Chevron 91; overall sierra's post seems valid; just need an official manufacturer statement to put us all at ease =D

I think you missed the intent of his statement... he was using the comment in a completely different context than you intended as a joke.

Sounds a good round of fuel and additive combination testing is in order to help prove/disprove this assertion.

Just don't use the octane-in-a-bottle boosters... 93.3 won't differ much from 93

Just got my car back from subaru. The regional tech rode with me and documented the tweet noise under driving condition. He said it could be related to the chirping at idle so he recommend focusing on fixing the chirping noise first. He also took the car in the garage and listen for the source of the chirping noise. He said the noise is coming from the direct injection high pressure fuel pump. He offered to order a new pump and see if that will fix the noise. I told him if it's the same pump he is replacing with I'd rather wait and see if there are any new development from corporate (maybe a new fuel pump design). He did say its a known issue and Toyota is taking the lead at finding a solution. If I hear anything new I will keep you guys posted.

just a lil over 100 miles and heard it last night while warming up the car.. i didnt hear it at first not until the temp gauge needle reached the first bar and i started hearing the chirping sound.. ;( so my concern is...

does this affect the performance of the motor? could it be possibly hurting the motor or maybe running lean because of the lack of lubrication on fuel system?

Is it sounds like when it was new

Yes I agree. Its makes a lot of sense . So maybe they will suggest to use some kind of lubricant in the gas. Especialy for ppl who use only 91 octane ,
Or use a different kind of washer in the pump.
