Wrong one. The Lake Peigneur sinkhole happened in 1980. The one in the gif above was 80 miles away and happened in 2012.

The failures were shoddy engineering yes. I consider the area "unlucky" due to the relatively close occurrences of virtually the same failure.

It's not like getting hit by multiple tornadoes in tornado alley. I'm guessing that salt mines filling with water are relatively uncommon and here are two examples pretty close to each other.

So the community was "unlucky" that they had such shitty engineers locally.
